By somebodywho On 12/02/01

hi! i'm new and i've been lurking for a long time. i know you guys can help me!

so here's the deal. i want to make somebody [a boy] a smushy romantic so glad i found you mix tape for christmas. and this is a person who doesn't do mainstream. and i've been thinkg for a week, and i realized all my favorite love songs are by guys to girls! now, i'm not that hung up on it, but i think a tape entirely made up of songs with the wrong pronoun [she] just isn't gonna work!!!!

ladies, help me please! i need love songs! anything is welcome!

ps. i already have jazz women- billie, dinah washington etc. i need other types of music.

Here are some good songs:

Thank God I Found You (the orginal version and the remix) - Mariah Carey
Angel of Mine - Monica
I Think I'm In Love With You - Jessica Simpson
I Don't Wanna (be without you) - Aaliyah
From This Moment On - Shania Twain
The Way You Love Me - Faith Hill
Breathe - Faith Hill
All For You - Janet Jackson

i just made a love song tape for my friend who got married, and i had the same problem. although this tape was more a celebration of love rather than an expression of my feelings, so i didn't care as much, except for the sake of balance.

"Gigantic" by the pixies is a good one. maybe "la la love you" by the pixies too; i don't think that's gender specific.

I dunno, i'm drawing a blank now!

By donna dora On 12/02/01

la la love you is the best flirt song ever.
i use it liberally as it can be taken tongue in cheek as well.

By Katrime On 12/02/01

How about:

Suzanne Vega: Caramel and Gypsy
Yo La Tengo: Sugarcube (male voices, but not gender-specific)
Sleater-Kinney: I wanna be your Joey Ramone
the Bangles: I don't remember a specific song, but I'm sure a good one exists.

By MizMosa On 12/02/01

howsa bout:

Ice Cream by Sarah McLaclan(sp?)
(I can't remember if that's gender specific or not, but it's awfully cute and smushy)
Falling is Like This by Ani Difranco
Dream a Little Dream by Mamas and the Papas
I Fall for You by Fleming and John(kinda funny rather than smushy)

maybe these are too mainstream? I hope I helped out a bit..
-Anna

By slygirlstar On 12/03/01

ok girly folk lovesongs:
"Drive" by Melissa Ferrick :) it's very direct.
"Ten Year Night" Lucy Kaplansky
"Lodestar" by Sarah Harmer?
"I Love, I Love" Dar Williams
"Easy People" The Nields
"Rock Me to Sleep" Jill Sobule
Also look up stuff by Azure Ray. they're soooo good. and very hip and indie. I'm not sure off the top of my head which songs are love songs though. Maybe "Rise"?

"Johnny Feelgood" Liz Phair!

i very much support "Falling is Like This" by Ani

By _lilac_ On 12/03/01

i made a lovesong mixtape for my baby and his also not into mainstream at all. some songs i used was:
Foo fighters - dear lover
portishead - a reason to love you
incubus - summer romance
creed - beautiful
madonna - crazy for you
pearl jam - interstate love song
phil collins - true colors
sadovaja - kiss your darling
the cardigans - lovefool

some of the songs are about girls though. but i think that they're really good if you don't wan't the usual stuff that's on tv right now.

in the end i took some really beautiful song that wasn't really about love but could be. i also put red hot chili peppers scar tissue because i consider it to be "our song". maybe you have a song you can put on it too. or maybe you could put on "touch and go - would you go to bed with me" =)

good luck!!

how about any version of someday my prince will come?

and speaking of the smiths, which is the one with "and if a double decker bus crashes into us, to die by your side is such a heavenly way to die"? smushy and kinda funny....

By negative_nancy On 12/03/01

there is a light that never goes out -the smiths

i think it's on Louder Than Bombs

By caseywyn On 12/03/01

Just about anything from the Magnetic Fields' 69 Love Songs collection. The songs range from funny to serious and they are all over the pronoun map... Also:
Psychedelic Furs: "Love My Way"
Blur: "Tender"Also - look into Pulp... and the Beatles and Bonnie Prince Billy... There are so many good ones out there! Have fun!!

By shuttrrbug On 12/03/01

lydia gets 14 points for suggesting the dandys.

"Loving U" by Minnie Ripperton

There's a bunch on Bjork's "Vespertine."

siwrl

By lumo On 12/10/01

is 'loving u' the one they use in commercials that is really high pitched and kind whiney? that's an awesome song!! hahaha... good suggestion!!

By BootsHeartsPunk On 12/03/01

"At My Most Beautiful" from REM's album Up. . . I don't think any pronouns are used

By Tigrrrl On 12/03/01

I second REM's "At My Most Beautiful".

My suggestions are:
-Cowboy Junkies "I Saw Your Shoes" (pretty upbeat for them and giddily silly)
-Liz Phair "Supernova"
-Pretenders "I'll Stand by You"
-Beth Orton "Central Reservation" (gorgeous even if I'm not sure it's 100% lovey)

And even though you have the jazz women, I gotta suggest "Night and Day" from Anita O'Day or "Fly me to the Moon".

And how about some Aretha Franklin, like "Rescue Me" or "You Make Me Feel like a Natural Woman"?

By ambercore On 12/03/01

ella fitzgerald - fever
shania twain - you've got a way
fisher - i will love you
mazzy star - fade into you

By siwrl On 12/03/01

You might already have this in mind, but "At Last" by Etta James is really nice.

siwrl

By pixelicious On 12/03/01

if you don't want to use the cure's version of "lovesong," tori amos does a good cover of it. it's all pianoey and stuff.

By mel_b On 12/03/01

"you're the only one" by The Mr.T Experience
is a super cheesy one.
and um... "for you" by nerf herder is cute too.

By Astrea On 12/04/01

Nine Inch Nails - Closer (hehe, okay, so it might not be quite appropriate, but I guess it depends on the relationship)
Deftones - Sweetest Perfection
Portishead - All Mine
Nirvana - Love Buzz
Nina Hynes - The Magic Stuff
Sleater-Kinney - The Size of Our Love
Weezer - You Gave Your Love to Me Softly
Radiohead - True Love Waits
Garbage - Number One Crush
I second the suggestion of songs from Bjork's new CD, Vespertine.
Jeff Buckley did some really good love songs, though no names are coming to mind right now.
Hope these help!
