i can't get that link to work...:(

By queenbee On 11/25/01

nevermind. i got it to work by typing a period (.) before the jpg. super cute! i'm going to make one for my roomate for xmas, so if you need any help negativenancy just let me know.

By negative_nancy On 11/26/01

queenbee - let me know how it goes!

i got stuck after knitting 11 in stockinette, because i wasn't sure if i was on the right row, and i wasn't sure about the increasing, either.

someone explained it to me once, and now i totally forget what they told me.

i also wanted to try to knit kitty ears on a helmet-type hat, but i'm not exactly sure how to to that... nevermind! i'll figure it out.

Negative nancy,
This is exactly where I am mixed up as well.
Experienced knitters,
I need help on a few things:
1. After the ribbing, on the row with all the increases, how many stitches should you end up with total on the needles?
2. When working on the center 84 stitches in St st, what do you do with all the other stitches on the ends? Slip them? Put them on stitch holder?
3. Is there a good site that shows how to do twisted stitch increases that won't leave a hole like untwisted increases? I have directions for this, and I seem to be following them all right, but I still get a hole at the increase.
4. When I'm done with the 11 St st rows, and it says knit 28, increase twice, knit 23, I still have the problem of all those stitches on the ends that haven't been worked in St st. Do I start to work those now?
Akkkk! I MUST make this hat, it is just too cute! Help me, please
Jen G.

I don't remember offhand how it worked, but looking at the pattern again:
1) you should have 6 stitches on a safety pin/holder, 84 stiches on you needles, and another 6 stiches on a holder. which brings us to
2) the stiches should be on a holder. two holders, one on both ends. I used two huge paperclips, but I'd reccommend a safety pin.
3) I experimented with this for making stiches, but I ended up knitting in the front and the back of the stitch.
check this out http://knitting.about.com/library/bllearniandd.htm
and look at the knitting into the front and back instructions.
4) don't worry about the stitches on the ends until the very end - you do all of those increases (I used markers to know when to increase, so I didn't have to keep counting), knit 3 more rows stockinette, and then cast off.

etc. etc., and you don't need the extra stitches until you make the neckband. it's hard to understand how the hat comes together until you're done, but it's very nice, and if you follow the instructions it comes out perfectly!

It's so cute! I'm going to make one. Try the link now:>http://www.halfempty.com/dustgirl/devilkitty.jpg

By kari-star On 12/27/01

hey y'all - I made one of these for a present to my cuz, and it turned out so nicely -

I used worsted weight yarn and US 7 needles, and it was just about large enough for an adult when I was done. I made the ribbing at the end longer to compensate, and I didn't sew up the front neck seam. (I told her to string some ribbon through to tie it closed.) I'm making one for me now, and I'm adding about 1.5 inch of new stockenette after/with the 11 rows of stockenette. Hopefully this one will be just as nice as the other!

(I showed my step-sis the pattern, she's 21, and she said it's so cute, who are you making it for? and I said for me, and she said you are totally not 24, are you...)

By ilpop On 12/27/01

talking about HELMET HATS, do any of you know any good links to any patterns or so? i've been looking but I haven't found anything, I only get these ear flap hats that can be bought anywhere these days, and that's not what I'm after.
anyone?

By hightide On 12/28/01

I like this one because it's based off the measurements for the person it's being made for, even though I had to read it about 10 times before I could understand it (probably because I'm just not good at reading patterns, period): >http://www.woolworks.org/patterns/hood.txt

I'm assuming you are looking for a balaclava-like hood, kind of like the "Teletubby" hood in the ChicKnit gallery?
(chicknits.com) I'm working on a balaclava in a soft mohair, and making llama ears separately to attach to the top.

There's a good pattern for a simple watch-cap at http://www.lionbrand.com

hoping someone is going to recheck this thread sometimes soon:

i just got to the directions for the neck band and am not sure how to do it.

directions say to take the 6 stices off the first safety pin, join the wool, pick up and knit 25 stitches. i get the concept im going for here (i think), but how exactly does one join wool? does that just meanstart using the same wool i just snipped off the back part? and to pick up stitches, does that mean i just slip them onto my needle, or do i need to knit them on?

thanks ever so much. i'm so close to having a kitty head!

By kari-star On 12/28/01

the way I join wool is to leave a tail end hanging, and to just start knitting with the new piece of yarn. I don't tie a knot, or worry about fastening the new yarn to anything, but I just knit away, maybe tug at the tail end a little to make sure the stitch is secure, and then I weave in the ends when I'm all done with the piece.

when I made this part, I put the 6 stitches on my right needle, picked up the 25 stitches on my left needle so the first stitch is closest to the 6 stitches on the right, and then knit all of the 25 stitches off of the left needle to the right needle. Does that make sense? I hope so.

here is another kitty hat pattern i found, i'm not sure how much it differs from the first link, http://www.kittyville.com/knit/kitty_hat.html

By negative_nancy On 03/07/02

I'm wondering if anyone had any luck with the pattern? i tried SO many times last winter, and i really struggled with it.

if you finished it, PLEASE SHARE!! :)

i would be SO glad if it worked out for someone! ;)

By kari-star On 03/07/02

hey nancy,
I finished it, made 2, actually. it went really well! if you have any questions, let me know, ok?

By negative_nancy On 03/07/02

forestflower - that's a great kitty hat!!

I just knit a 'lion hat' for my 13 month old, it's too big, but it is the CUTEST!

I'm going to attempt to make my own kitty hat pattern, sort of a variant between the one that forestflower posted, and the pattern i used for my son's lion hat... I'll have to post what i come up with!

does anyone know what an I-cord is? :p

By lemonbasil On 03/08/02

i-cord (idiot cord) is an invention by the late elizabeth zimmermann (genius). it is basically a little knitted tube that is super easy to make. you can make it on its own or attached to something else. i'm sure there are instructions somewhere on the net. its good for straps.
