are there any type of plants that will grow without ANY sunlight?
i would hate to buy a plant just to have it die.
any tips?

My freshman year I had ivy that lived quite nicely with florescent light (that was on A LOT). It died as soon as I moved out. Hmm.

I had an aloe vera that survived with very little light (next to my computer) ya hardly ever have to water it either! Not to mention you're the best friend of anyone that gets themselves with a curling iron or an iron...

Pothos (also called Devil's Ivy) and Peace Lilies are two plants that are fairly easy to grow, and require little light.

Philodendrons are great plants where there's no light - you can even root them in water, they don't need dirt. They're really easy to find- target usually has tons of them - it's an ivy-like plant. Plus, they are supposed to eliminate formaldehyde in the air, which i'd say is a good thing.

I'd go with pothos... It's cheap and really hard to kill. It looks great in a hanging basket or on a shelf or whatever....

You can also grow begonias and African violets in fluorescent light, but they are more difficult.

i think succulents should work ok, plus they are totally low-maintenance because you only need to water them once a week, max.

hey sweaterweather, do you post on strap-on?

By tattoobelly On 09/27/01

Lucky bamboo. You can get it from plant stores or from Trader Joes (so I've heard) and you just stick it in water and it takes off. I have some that has done very well in indirect light, and this Vietnamese restaurant I go to has some in very Very little light and it's doing fine. Plus it looks really cool.

i just got a pothos plant today. i asked the flower shop guy what would grow in my cubicle that obviously has no windows. he said a pothos plant just like many of the cool chicks on this board suggested. its so pretty. the leaves are are a nice bright green with yellow streaks.
i love it!

my mom used to have an 'air cactus'

it seems like my kind of plant - hardly needs any sunlight, and you only have to spritz it once or twice a year.

sounds like my kind of plant. I have brown thumbs.

hi hi! I'm in college, let me fill you in on what I have (even though its been mentioned before..

I have 3 bamboo shoots which everyone thinks are the total bomb. :-P You can buy them @ most florists/grocery stores. I got mine at the flea market.

I also have a Pothos which is beautiful and is even propogating (making babies) as we speak. It's doing well. They only need to be by the window if you want them to get color running through their leaves (some are yellow, some white) otherwise their leaves stay mostly green.

I also have two african violets which are growing ok/well but they have no more flowers and I'm feeding them African Violet food. They also need to be watered a lot.

on http://www.yougrowgirl.com they have a more extensive list. I love my plants! I should post pictures. They're like my children/pets/friends/family here now that I'm in college alone. Isn't that sad?

:-)

You thought I was kidding, didn't you? :)
UGH Free web hosting sucks. If you want to see the pictures of my plants you have to go to my website and go straight down to the bottom, then you can click on the links. Sorry!!! :( I'd really rather you didn't have to go to my website. But do it anyway! my plants are purty.

No, I don't post on strapon. Must be somebody else.

spider plants are pretty hardy. they grow pretty fast too. you'll probably need to repot at least once during the school year.
