So I'm trying to make the "To Dye For" sweater from Stitch'n'Bitch. I bought some yarn today, got home, and realized it would be perfect for this sweater. Trouble is, I need approximately 725 meters of yarn, as close as I can figure. I bought two balls of yarn.

Here's the thing: on the label, it says "n/ca 50g=n/ca 200m". Then on this little square beneath the suggested needle size and the gauge, it says "300g". What the hell does this mean? If it means what I think it does, namely that each ball contains 300 grams of wool, than that means that each ball contains 1200m of yarn, and frankly, the ball doesn't look big enough to be containing over a kilometre of yarn, I don't care how thin it is.

Can someone please help me out? I'm so lost...

I don't know what the 300g means, but,

100 grams = 3.5 oz, almost a quarter of a pound.

I'm guessing the skins are 50grams, and 200 meters per 50 grams. You'll need 2 more skeins of yarn to complete the sweater. You'll probably want a bit extra from what they ask for, jsut in case.

You can find out for sure by weighing the skeins. If they really are 300 grams, they'll weigh about 11 oz each.

If you're like me, and you don't own a scale, then remember that:

a fluid ounce of water weighs about an ounce. Take an ordinary pop can, and fill it nearly to the top with water. That's about 11 oz right there, and you can compare it to the weight of a skein pretty easily.

Okay...I tried the pop can thing. It is definately not 11oz. *bows down to your superior knitting knowledge* Thank you crazybones!

Off to buy yarn!

Hi - sometimes yarn labels give the average amount of yarn required to knit a sweater - maybe that's what the 300g means?

Usually this information is given in no. of balls required - eg. 11 balls for an average ladies sweater.

Regardless, you definately have 200m per ball here, so you would need 4 balls to knit your 'To Dye For'. Good luck!
