We're throwing a party for two couples who are both expecting baby girls. Rather than play silly games, I thought it would be fun to simply have a pink theme. Pitchers of pink cosmopolitans, etc. So I turn to you to help me come up with fun ideas for fun food with a pink tint. Ham is an obvious choice. What about dips and other snacks? Thanks...

By nattywall On 03/01/04

i'm afraid i'm not of much help in the kitchen, but here are some ideas that immediately came to mind:

- pink lemonade or pink punch (cranberry ginger ale and raspberry sherbet) for the mothers-to-be
- smoked salmon, cream cheese & crackers
- rich cupcakes with true "baby girl" pink icing
- pink grapefruit and... ?

allrecipes.com might have more suggestions if you simply entered "pink" in the search field :)

Strawberries, other kinds of berries, strawberry ice cream, pink cupcakes, pink punch, cherry 7up, pink cookies, etc. You could also use food coloring to dye other food items. If you want to be ambitious and make your own rolls/bread, you could definitely tint it pink.

You could make one of those punchbowls with a strawberry sherbet floating in it, so it's all frothy and pink.

I love color-food parties!

You could tint cream cheese or sour cream, and add seasonings to make a dip for pretzels or chips.

The health food stores sell chips made from all kinds of grains. I've never seen pink but the blue-corn ones would be pretty with pink dip.

Have fun!

cotton candy!

watermelon
tomato flavoured wraps filled with a sundried tomato cream cheese concoction
maybe strawberry filled cake, well I actually like strawberry filled doughnuts, but thats just me....if you were to go with that you could probably tint the powdered sugar
get pink melting chocolate, they're called merkens, melt and pour into babyish type molds, or mix with nuts for a pink nut brittle, lots of homemade candy recipes can be altered pink, if you are so inclined

Ooh, I do like the idea of the tomato wraps...These are all great sweets ideas too. I really need some hearty fare as well, though.

I read somewhere of a dip made with beets and garlic that sounded interesting and would turn out pink.

I guess red things - like salsa, etc, mixed with white things (sour cream, cream cheese, etc) would produce pink.

Oooh, I'd love to make up little dishes of only pink M&Ms or pink jellybeans or pink Smarties!

By cackalackie On 03/01/04

(I happen to have bought a special bag of M&Ms during Breast Cancer Awareness month: just pink and white!)

.cocktail shrimp
.tortellini with vodka cream sauce or alfredo/tomato sauce combination
EDIT: you can make this into finger-food by skewering the tortellini
.salad with pink grapefruit (if you're not dead-set on all pink) and raspberry vinaigrette
EDIT: you can make this finger-food by using individual endive leaves as "cups" to put a little salad in.
.cherry bagel chips with tinted or strawberry cream cheese piped on
.mini pink popcorn balls
.pink marshmallows

Maybe it's just me, but I love pink Hostess Snowballs (the cupcakes covered in pink colored coconut marshmallow to form a dome shape). They're so pretty and delicious.

By ladyjane On 03/01/04

I always thought those animal crackers that are iced with pink hard icing are nice. (Not that I can eat them anymore, anyway!)

I think you should put a whole mound of pink Hostess Snoballs on a cake plate as a sort of decoration. :D (Inspired a bit by kungfugirl's above post).

And I think there are plenty of pink jello mold ideas, or for strawberry or pink lemonade pies on allrecipes.com

Since Easter is coming up, pink marshmallow Peeps in rabbit and chick shapes should be available....

sounds like fun!

If you want pasta, or something more...food like, and not sweets. [I LOVE sweets, but it's nice to have "real food" available to balance it out.]
You could always make potato chowder, and tint it pink. It would still taste yummy!
Maybe fettachini alfredo that is pink?
They don't really have pink pasta, but they do have red.
Maybe a pretty salad with radishes as a garnish? Not pink, but if MOST things are pink, a few non-pink items could still fit right in, with the right garnishes.

Buttery spritz cookies a la 1960s Betty Crocker. Dyed with pink or red food coloring.

Borscht, borscht, borscht!
Can't get enough of borscht (beet soup).

sushi rolls with ume (sour plum) mixed in the rice to make it pink. i saw an art sushi book that had a heart shape pink sushi wrapped inside a regular white rice circle sushi. i wanna try making that for my next party!

ETA: good thing it wasn't a boy, a blue food party would be harder!

I don't have any ideas for you, but I would just like to say that I like the idea of a food theme instead of the horrible games played at baby showers. I'm going to one on Sunday and I dread the games. Hooray for your friends who are attending the shower!!! (And hooray for you for dumping the bad games!)

By ladyjane On 03/01/04

I guess that sour-cream based dip could also be colored pink with food coloring?

(Even though I think pink onion dip would be...interesting. Hmmm.)

By Xuli On 03/02/04

JediEmpressMel was wondering about pink pastas ... what about pink vodka sauce? (It's marinara sauce with vodka and cream in it. Soooo good. You can get it pre-packaged at Whole Foods or Trader Joes.)

Also, the cookbook Still Life With Menu by Mollie Katzen has an *amazing* recipe for strawberry meringue pie that is to die for.

By peanut On 03/02/04

I used to make a really nice cream of tomato soup. That's a little more red than pink, but you can swirl a little extra sour cream in at the end...

Pink Lady apples!
Oooh! You could make a waldorf salad with shredded carrots, cubed pink lady apples, and dried cranberries instead of raisins. Then put a little red food color or a TINY bit of campari into the mayo.....

yum.
peanut.

Oh these are great ideas. Thanks everybody. I also thought that in keeping with the theme, I could offer shots of "medicine" (jaegermeister) out of either a great big spoon or those wee cups you get with cough syrup.

And for decor, I have a few ideas as well, including tea lights placed in baby food jars.

By mindshare On 03/02/04

Just wanted to make sure you checked out the article on this very site about red/pink food for Valentine's Day. There are a bunch of ideas there.
