i want to crochet a beanie, with the design of a cute skull on it, but i can't find even the most basic pattern for a crochet beanie,, does anyone know where i may find one, somewhere besides a fabrics store????

Hi, Sarah--

By beanie, do you mean a little a close-fitting cap (like a yarmulke, but bigger) or something more like a ski-cap, sans pompom? Or maybe more like a tam or beret? Can you describe the shape/size of what you're looking for?

I've got a slew of patterns for hats, both knit and crochet, and I'm sure we can find and adapt something fairly easily.

hey,
the easiest way I have found for designing your own close fitting cap is to crohet a circle to fit your head then continue crocheting that same amount to shape it.

To crochet a basic circle:
ch 3 11 stitches in ring (your choice)sl st in top of beg ch

Rd 2 ch 3 2 stitches in each st of previous row

rd 3 ch 3 1 st in next st, 2 in next 1 in next etc

to continue increase in every 3rdstitch for 4th row, every fourth stitch for 5th row etc.

tis is easier if you have a marker so yo know when your rounds begin and end. i use a safety pin.

continue increasing until this flat circle cocvers the top of your head (mine reaches 99 stitches, but I have a big head and used a big hook) At this point just continue with the same amount of sts (in my case 99) until the hat is the length you want. You can adapt this to any pattern. It loooks kind of like a crocheted bowl.

Let me translate for those who are abbreviation deficient:

To crochet a basic circle:
ch 3 (this means chain 3) join with sl st (join these three chains together with a slip stitch) 11 stitches in ring (this means crochet whatever type of stitch you want, single, double whatever, into the ring formed by joining the chains 11 times)sl st (slip stitch)in top of beg ch (beginning chain, this means that you are basically finishing off the ring you just made by joining all the stitches)

Rd 2 (round 2) ch 3 (chain 3 to give yourself the height you need) 2 stitches in each st (stitch) of previous row (now you have 22) join with a slip stitch

rd 3 (round 3) ch 3 (chain 3)1 st in next st, 2 in next 1 in next etc (do you understand? You are increasing every other one, you'd now have a total of 36 stitches

to continue increase in every 3rdstitch for 4th row, every fourth stitch for 5th row etc.

tis is easier if you have a marker so yo know when your rounds begin and end. i use a safety pin.

Is this clear now?
