i've been considering going as a 40's pin-up for halloween...but am having a hard time finding ways to 'set' my hair...any thoughts on this, or the pin up concept in general???

That could be really cute. Do you know what you are going to wear? One piece bathing suits, no French cut thighs, or cuffed short shorts and a camp shirt, always with mary janes or plain pumps with a heel. Pencilled thin brows, almost kewpie doll lips in scarlet, understated jewelry, but button earrings. At least that's what comes to my mind.

If whatever you wear is long enough for stockings, remember the seam.

The hair styles usually had either short bangs with slight curl to them or were swept back, no part. You can use orange juice cans or something similar to set the wave for turning your hair ends under. Guess you could do it with a curling iron in some fashion, but I don't use one ever.

Somewhere on this list, someone in the last coupla weeks used this term that escapes me: its like a net that captures all of your hair. This was also popular in the forties. You pin it at the crown and all of your hair goes in it like a hair net only more decorative.

That's all I can think of.

thanks for the ideas beth!

i have a red and white gingham camp shirt, i'll either go that route, or something dressier, since i LOVE the seamed stockings and garters. i'll have to try the orange juice can trick...my hair is SUPER straight, so heat setting won't work...

keep the thoughts coming !!!

Beth: a snood :)

I can't say, however that a snood comes to mind with pin-up-girls...in my head the image associated is more Jo March....hmm....Jo in lingerie and lipstick...yikes..

even if you're not wearing stockings--paint a seam on bare legs like the thrifty 40s girls did during the war!

Platforms, but not way-out 70s style, more conservative platform pumps with a round toe

the net thingie beth was blanking on is a snood, and a good idea if you have long hair and want the 40s Betty Page/Betty Grable look.

Great site for hair like this:

My friend actually THINKS she is from the 1950's (she wears "dungarees" as opposed to jeans!) And she sets her hair every night. A bit obsessive? yea:)

Here's a link with instructions on how to do all sorts of 40's hairdos. They look kind of involved, but I'm sure the finished product will be neat!

This is such a great idea!!! I try to go out as a 40's pin-up girl far too often...put thats another post ;)

i've been doing the 1940's hair thing off and on for a while now and no matter how much I practice I can never get those styles perfectly on my own!! I was looking thru my grandma's high school pictures and I'm astonished how those girls got their hair like that everyday!for everyday kinda stuff I usually just fool around with bobby pins and twisting my hair and it looks alright. but for special occasions I leave it to someone else.

If those websites don't work for you, you might want to consider going to a beauty parlor! I did this for my prom (I went as a 1950's starlet) and it was cheap and saved me much stress. What you have to do is find an old ladies beauty parlor where you live...you know the kind where grandmas go once a week to get there hair "set"? Hip cool salons won't work-- they usually don't have the stuff to set hair with and anyway they are too expensive. I went to an old lady salon to get my little over shoulder length hair set in a side part with waves. An older lady did my hair and she knew exactly what I wanted. It cost me $10 and I got to sit around under the dryers with old ladies and catch up on the local gossip! Best of all, my hair was so set, it kept its shape for two days after (it probably would have stayed longer, but i was dying to wash my hair) It looked great :)

Good luck!!
