i'm curious about your leg-shaving habits. Does anyone out there not shave at all? Anyone use products like "nair"? How often do you shavers shave? What are your experiences?

I went for 5 years without shaving at all. I've been back to shaving for the past five years, and I'm really not into it. I like the smoothness, but I only end up shaving about twice a week so I'm prickly most of the time. In an ideal world I think I'd like to be able to go back and forth between smooth (i enjoy the days when i'm smooth) and softly furry, but never be prickly.

What about you?

I shaved about a month ago and just now I realized that I can barely feel or see anything...could this be pregnancy related? If it is then, darn! But as far as shaving habits go, I can go with out shaving for quite a while because I wear pants all the time....

i'm pretty lazy about shaving, ecspecially in the winter. i shave when i feel like it i guess. i shave my pits regularly because i use a tom's of maine deoderant and uhh it's doesn't exactly keep me "sure".

tried nair once. it was seriously aweful it stunk and it only removed patches of my hair(which isn't very dark or think).

i don't mind being fuzzy.

By guttergrrl On 01/30/04

I generally don't shave from October to May, unless my legs are superdry like they are now, so I was going to probably shave this weekend just to stop the itching.

By deleria On 01/30/04

yeah, i stopped shaving for awhile and i liked being softer. my underarms get very dry and irritated no matter WHAT i do to remove the hair, but i'm just sick of that shit, now.

By stanny On 01/30/04

I'm not hugely picky about shaving anything. I do shave the pits once or twice a week, and the legs (up till my knees) once or twice, too, especially during the winter. However, I *loathe* shaving the bikini line, and it hates it too--it always seeks revenge by getting red and bumpy and angry, so I avoid doing it if at all possible.

But for me, it's got nothing to do with politics and everything to do with being lazy and not liking to do it very much. I am, however, hugely committed to my tweezers, and pluck my eyebrows and ... erm... my chin (eep!) every day. (The chin is just because I'm a wee bit paranoid, having had an aunt with an accidental goatee...)

I got ambitious and waxed my legs a month or so ago. Waxing never gets every single hair, so I still shave occasionally (like, less than once a week).

I regularly wax my bikini line, but have only done my legs a couple of times - and on the legs, it seems to last SO LONG! The last time I did it, I was still "having" to shave much less often about three months later.

By grrrlcore On 01/30/04

I can never be bothered to shave. I like having smooth legs but its too much effort. In winter its just wrong for me to shave, I need the hair for extra warmth !

I did try sugaring my legs once, like waxing but it smelt like toffee. I ended up with bruises all over my legs, especially as I was going on holiday the next week. At least it smelt nice though (it didnt do much on my leg hair either, maybe the bruises just hide the fuzz)

By goodluckjen On 01/30/04

I wax my brows at home, but am completely terrified of waxing the cha-cha--like can you do the *whole* thing? The skin is not nearly as tight as face skin, and...yeah. I'm curious.

Wintertime shaving is fairly sporadic, but I prolly shave the legs once a week, the pits when they get a quarter inch or so of growth. Otherwise they are itchy. I groom the "junk" sporadically as well, depends on mood (I'm much more likely to groom when I'm in a good mood) and it ranges from mild trimming to completely bare. It's all in the mood.

By pianogirl On 01/31/04

"cha-cha"....heehee

yeah you can get the whole thing waxed. a true brazilian is ALL of it off, except for the little stripe in front.

i had a talk with a former co-worker who was an estie and she was telling me about how noone gets a true brazilian because they'd have to get on all fours to get it ALL off (theres a nice picture for you!!!)

i used to shave, then i didnt, then i did, now i dont. i havent for a really long time. i figure i will when summer comes around, at least my legs, i cant stand my armpits itching when i shave them. (uber sensitive skin and a rzor do not get a long), same with the ikini line. i LIVE in boy cut swim shorts.

By Punky Brewster On 02/01/04

I read an article in a local paper about a salon that does Brazilian waxing. Yup it's true, there are folks out there who will get on all fours and let a stranger smear wax on their uh..."parts".

All I have to say is OUCH!!!!!

By jenabug On 02/01/04

stanny---i am totally the same with my shaving habits--and the plucking....not so much the chin, but definitely the eyebrows. daily. sometimes more than once. those little guys sneak up on ya while you're not looking.

*****maddog--i just read down to your post and you mentioned the intuition razor, and i have to give it a resounding yes. I love those damn things

I shave my legs very rarely and my pits have been euro for a few years now. Might shave my legs before my boyfriend visits next, but he doesn't really care.

By misshawklet On 01/30/04

I didn't really in high school that much, I didn't in college really, or after, and now I do but I'm pretty lazy about it. Pits only take two seconds, so that is easy, but legs...in teh winter, I do MAYBE once every two or three weeks. In the summer, maybe once a week or so, just to my knees. I wear modest bathing suits anyhow, so the bikini i can do mininmally, b/c no matter how much cream I use, I get bumpy.

Its not a big deal to me at all, really.

By VoodooToaster On 01/30/04

I'm in a bad spot because I hate underarm hair and shave regularly, but my underarms rebel big time and I always have ingrown hairs. I wish I could afford to get it lasered off, but each session is like $200, with most people needing like 4 sessions or more. I have better things to spend money on.

By none On 01/30/04

i completely stop shaving in the winter (except pits) but my leg hair is pretty sparse. in the spring/summer i shave once every couple weeks or so.

By sophiapagodatoo On 01/30/04

good thread! during high school and two years after, i would shave my legs only if the occasion 'demanded' it... i don't *remember* ever shaving regularly, but maybe i did for a while? started shaving the pits in like 8th grade though, and stayed consistant with that til...

i met my boyf. i'd stopped shaving my legs during that summer, and the first night we spent together, i asked, 'do you mind?' (NOT because i CARED, i was just curious :), and he said he admired me a lot for it, and then He gave Me the speech about the fashion industry, women's rights, etc... so I'm the only person I know who stopped shaving their pits when they GOT a boyf. :) kinda like how lumberjacks wear beards until they 'get them a woman' but backwards.

so i don't shave anything. ever. it is awesome.

By aplusgoldstar On 01/30/04

i'm actually pretty habitually lazy about it, for a couple of reasons. the first is that i went to a catholic girls' school for six years, and we all just got to a point where we didn't care. the swim team girls wore tights all winter 'cos they didn't shave; the rest of us just did or didn't, and it made no difference. the second is that shaving my legs makes them way too fuckin' slippery during yoga (i do bikram yoga), so the hair provides some necessary friction for certain poses :)

By sophiapagodatoo On 01/30/04

along with the habits everyone has, i'm curious about your reason to (not) shave?

By Laurasia_ On 01/30/04

I only shave my legs about once a month. The reason--I hardly have any leg hair at all, so it hardly makes a difference. I just shave it whenever I notice that there's a little fuzz on there and it takes like 5 seconds to do in the shower.
I shave elsewhere every day though :)

By headbunnie On 01/30/04

Proud to be a never-shaved-my-legs girl. I'm 27, do shave my pits, and have blonde fine hair, so my legs don't really need it.

When i was in middle school and all my friends started shaving, i ask my mom why. and she said becuase they didn't like their dark hair. so i didn't do it. never saw the point, you can barely see it. and now i see that my legs are not getting the dry scaley look that some shavers get and the hair is baby soft...super bonus it never got stiffer or rough feeling.

and my fiance back a while ago in the dating phase said something about women who don't shave to his dad. something like "i'm really happy it doesn't bother me" because of my legs...and his dad was like "it doesn't bother me, dated a girl who didn't"...stephen asked who? right as his mom came around and his dad just pointed at her. (she's also a very pale/light haired lady).

my whole point in not doing it now, is that i'm too lazy and knwo if i did it once i'd hate it and then i'd have rough hair to deal with and that would stress me out.

By rhinokey On 01/30/04

I shave my pits every time I shower (I have that handy dandy venus holder thing stuck to the tile, so it's always there), and I shave my legs when I feel like it, which varies between every shower to once every two months, depending on what I feel like doing. The reason I shave my pits so religiously is that I am incredibly sweaty, and antiperspirants work a lot better on smooth skin with no hair to get in the way.

My bikini fuzz, I tend to leave in the winter (maybe a bit of pruning with the manicure scissors...), but I get sick of it in the summer if it's warm and have a tendency to go nuts and just shave it all off, completely bare. Then, I let most of it grow back, and just keep shaving the visible bits down if I'm going swimming or whatever.

I've used Nair, it totally sucked- barely took off any hair at all.

I shave my pits every time I shower (every day or two). My legs: usually twice a week, sometimes more, in the winter maybe once a week. If I wanted them smooth, I'd have to shave every day- but who has time for that? And I wax my bikini line.

All for myself, no one else really cares!

By DrPhibes On 01/30/04

you gals don't NEED to shave. body hair is natural, not icky. i think it's kind of silly to make a whole chore out of doing something you really don't want to do.

By hindsight2020 On 01/30/04

I shave my armpits and legs. I went for a few months w/o shaving legs once, and they got so itchy I had to give in. I shave every few days in summer, and only on the wk/ends in winter. Why? I don't know. I guess it makes me feel good and pretty, like when I wear nice underwear whether someone will see them or not. So sue me. Anyway, I got my legs and bikini line waxed once, and will never do it again. I'm talking serious pain. It was nice to have smoothness for several weeks, though.

Does anyone know what time period it was when women began shaving? It seems pointless until the 1900's, with stockings, but older art works always portray nude women with no hair. What gives?
