my friend used to make these and I always thought they were nice.

you'll need:
bottle caps
magazine cut-outs our photos
glitter glue stuff
modge podge
jump rings
something to poke a hole in the bottle caps with
ball chain, string, or whatever.

1: find a magazine clip or photo you want to use, cut it so that it is smaller that the inside of the bottle cap. the edges don't have to be perfect, you are going to cover them with glitter.

2: glue the photo or magazine clipping down, and put modge podge over it, and surround it with glitter glue-y stuff.

3: poke a whole through the top slip it on a jump ring, and then on a ball chain or string or whatever!

I love these, and I wish I had time to do more!

does anyone else have ideas for cute necklaces?

Way back when I surfed, we would take cotton string and poke a hole through a shell and just wear that until it rotted and broke. Then do another one.

Another thing I've done is combine necklaces and other costume jewelry for dramatic effect. Like a strand of small "pearls" or beads, and a clip on earring as a pendant, or a fancy pin holding the necklace in place at one side of your neck/chest.

Remember the chewing gum wrapper necklaces? I never did learn how to make them, but they had to be easy. Zig-zag folds all the way, either all one color (Double mint green?) or a rainbow assortment.

Candy necklaces are fun, too. Tie or sew wrapped candy into a string you can wear. Not good for hot and humid weather. Definitely not good for surfing.

Paper clip chain with a couple of small origami birds (cranes?) hanging off of it.

Also used to make velvet or moire ribbon chokers. Lightweight pins can be used in the front, but just tie or knot in back. I only knew one person who used hooks and eyes to fasten it.

Time to go back to bed.

for 3 years a good friend of mine has been collecting and folding starburst wrappers like the gum necklace.

She says she's making a sweater.

I don't ask anymore, but I send her all my starburst wrappers

I know this is from a long time ago... but if you're still interested I have found a site with instructions on how to make gum wrapper chains, I have tried it also with starburst and it kind of works except that they are a bit wider than chewing gum wrappers so you have to fold them into 6 instead of 4, anyhoo if you go there you will understand.
www.gumwrapper.com/build.htm
it belongs to a guy who made the world record chain.

Thanks, Ros, I am curious about them and may do one at work just to annoy my coworkers. <evil grin>

My favourite and most complimented piece of jewellry is a necklace my brother made me. It's absolutly beautiful-a piece of Tigers Eye encased in a frame of thick soldering wire-wrapped loosely around it to make an amazing little asymmetrical cage.

The best part about it is that he made it when he was about 9, and he was a totally unartistic kid, so I don't know how he did it. AND, he got in trouble for using my dad's solder, cause it was expensive, hehe.

It's such a simple thing, but so lovely-you could do it with any wire and anystone/object. I know I've seen alot of them being sold that have stones wraped in a web of really fine wire...those are pretty common.

For fun jewelry, everyone should get into middle eastern dance. The costumes can be as crazy as you want them to be! (depending on your troope, of course.) Anyway, that's where I learned to make jewelry. Sorry if I'm babbling or spelling badly tonight, I've had just enough wine :)

I hear you Athyra! I do Greek and Israeli dance, some Lebanese, Macedonian, Turkish, as well as other International Folk dance.

All that glittery stuff, the spangles and coins and chains are so much fun to wear and to make. I've turned a few necklaces into one beautiful low slung chain belt with coins hanging off it, and a few faceted beads. In fact I have so much of it now that I am cutting down by half and giving the rest to a folk dancing scholarship program for auction.

Kess, I visited your site! Pretty stuff. Do you buy all your stones or do you tumble some yourself?

I have maybe a dozen or more rock and crystal necklaces. Lessee, hematite, tigereye, lapis, coral, amethyst, garnet, peridot, mixed agate, malachite, rose quartz, tourmaline, fossil shark teeth, tagua (okay, that's a nut, but it looks like ivory), shell, and a couple of odd pieces that have a few stones here and there.

My jewelry making tends to be from *real* findings. I find this or that and take a bit from here or there and string it together with a clasp from something else.

I have a tumbler but haven't used it yet...I usually buy my tumbled stones (and frankly, costing it out with my tumbler and all, I think it ends up about the same.)

Thank you for the compliments on the site!
