My guess is it was drawn in Illustrator (or similar vector illustration software) using a Wacom tablet (a graphics tablet with "pen") since it looks hand-drawn even though it's digital. Graphics tablets are amazing -- you can draw some artwork on paper and place it under a sheet on the tablet so you can trace it directly, or you can just draw freehand with the tablet. Either way, the art you draw gets popped into Illustrator and then you can modify it, add color fills, etc.

It also could have been drawn with a pen on paper, scanned in, then touched up and colored on the computer.

I agree with PlainMabel's assessment. It's got a computer drawn quality to it. You can download a trial version of fireworks from Macromedia.com ... It's a vector drawing program.

I downloaded the trial fireworks..is it hard to learn how to use it? I do like the idea of drawing straignt on the tablet..that is too cool.

Used to do this a lot at uni, pendrawing scanned in, imported into Photoshop, tidied up, using 'paintbucket' to fill in areas. If the line is broken, tho, it will spill into other areas, but then you just undo it and use the pentool to fill in the gaps and try again.

my suggestion.

If your intrested in work like this. buy a book on Adobe illustrator. and get a demo copy. most of the books come with a cd with a demo on it.

basically it's all about mastering the pen tool. which uses bezier curves.

Also look for trade magazines at barnes and noble or borders. Computer Arts is a great one.. look for one dealing with vector illustration.

It's an art form. This isn't something that is easly done. or rather easy to do but hard to master.

good luck

I agree with Libby. If you're into computer art, Illustrator is great. Takes a bit of practice and experimenting to control what you're doing, (and not just let all the fancy default options do all the work for you..) but so worth it.
There is also a little program called Streamline which you can probably pick up online somewhere, I'll try and find a link and post it. Basically, what it does is transform any image to a vector image!! It's a gem of a program! Also, you can play with the settings and colours and have hours of fun!!!!

ETA: Well, I've never really paid for it myself, but here's the Adobe link so you can see what it's all about...
+ there's a FREE Tryout.
