I don't know what to get my guy friend. He really likes chess, but i couldn't think of anything.

hmmm.
how about make him a chess set out of funky stuff. or paint an altoid tin and make it and paint a chess peice on it and give it to him for a coin holder or wallet. or chess jewelry?.? like a chess pendant of one of the peices?...or maybe finging him a tie or socks that have chess peices on it. or if he is a snail mail writer, chess looking handmade stationary or cards?

My hubby is a fanatic so I made him a fleece beanie with fleece cut outs of chess peices that I stitched on.He loved it.

i like the funcky chess pieces suggestion even better, but the 1st thing I thought was sculpey chess pieces...

As a musical fan, I'd say get him the musical "Chess" on cd!! Elaine Paige and Tommy Körberg (original version, London) are awesome singers and the music still doesn't feel dated. Maybe this is a weird suggestion but the music is good :)

make him a chocolate chess set... i made one for my boyfriend when we first met and it was great you can play and eat it when you take the pieces.....

By hilltop35200047 On 11/11/03

Thanks! I love all the suggestions, but how do u mold all the chocolate?

By Bumble V On 11/11/03

ooh, my husband loves chess too...great ideas!

You could also make a travel chess set by painting a aol cd case and printing out the chess pieces on magnetic paper.

Mmm, chocolate chess...my attention span is usually too short for chess but I just might be able to stretch it for chocolate!

i was going to say something along those lines. but however, the magnet part skipped my mind. good idea!

i'm totally going to make a checkers one.

i wonder what other simple board game can be done this way?

By kazoogrrl On 11/11/03

A bag for the pieces, or to hold a board, pieces and score keeping stuff? (Um, do you keep score in chess?). I was thinking of a messanger type bag.

Maybe build or redo a small table just for the chess board.

I made my fiance an entire chess set out of origami last year. I used the diagrams on this page, except with plain ol' white and black paper:
Edit: Actually - this isn't the one I used - but I have the instructions saved on my computer if you in the end do chose to do this - mine was much simpler.

It took a very very long time. I then shellacked the hell out of all of them - which sorta turned the white paper slightly translucent, but still looked very cool.

There is another set pattern in a book, but the pieces were very much harder, and some had multiple 'modules' so I stuck with the one above. If I can get over to his place, I'll take a pic.

The ideas above are great though! :o)

My first thought was the soundtrack for the musical Chess.

But I'm warped -- I have a thing about the musical in question. Abba is very cool.

They make kits where you can paint a chess set. You could try that -- my uncle used to have one like that.

i got the chocolate mold from a cake decorating shop mabe just look around where you buy your chocy supplies.... if i can fish it out i could send it to you (i cant promise but ill have a good dig for you)....

I found it! It's a single PDF, and the instructions are actually fairly good. Since I can't find the original page it came from (Which is also down due to high traffic quite a bit, if I can remember) I uploaded it to my website. I'm not claiming copyright - the producer is listed there somewhere. *g*

Have fun>http://www.bubble-dragon.net/images/crafts/chess.pdf

And to those whom requested pics - I'm trying, but he's all the way in Pittsburgh, and I'm an hour away. ;o)
