I've kind of got this skirt half made by me and half not, anyway problem is it fits my hips lovely but its way to big around the waist :( and i can't wear it in its present condition. Is there anyway to make it fit?

I know I could have done darts but wouldn't they needed to have been accounted for in the orginal pattern?

Thanks

You could still take in the sides at the waist...
or...figure out by how many inches it is too large. Just pinch the fabric where you would like the seam to be, and measure the extra.
Get a piece of elastic, and sew it on the back of the shirt at the waist, with the same amount of material gathered that you measured out...that way, it still stretches some, but it'll fit you.

If the waistband is not on the skirt already, you can pinch darts on the front and back (either side of the belly button on the front, and over each buttcheek/spine area on the back). Hold in place with pins and try it on. A little bit of dart goes a long way.

Usually, you do need to draw them into the pattern, but if you don't it's not that big of a deal. The dart edges just wont be caught in the waist seam (normally) so you might need to tweak it a bit to get it to lie flat when you wear it. Also, when you iron the darts, iron them to the outside of the skirt. It looks nicer when you wear it.

If the waistband is still on the skirt, you will either need to take it off to do the darting, or sew in on the sides while leaving the waistband intact.

Put it on inside out and pin it so it fits, then sew it. I guess special consideration should be made if there's a waistband or elastic or drawstring, but that's my basic method.

Darts are the way to go. I don't know your shape, but I've got a big ol' booty, and I generally need darts in the back and none (or much smaller ones) in the front. So if this is your shape try adding darts in the back first.

You can also take it in at the side seams (or if you have the aforementioned booty and it has a center back seam, this would be the place to start).

If it has a waistband you probably won't be happy with the result (whether you do darts or take it in at the seams) unless you take the waistband off (at least at the part where you're adding darts/increasing seam allowance plus a few inches on either side), shorten it, and then sew it back on.
