Topic Creative room divider ideas? Go to previous topic Go to next topic Go to higher level

I'll be moving to a new apartment soon (yay!). It has 2 rooms + kitchen and I've almost decided to use one of the rooms (the bedroom) just for crafts and writing/work. I'll have my bookshelves, desk etc in there.

This means I have to put my bed in the living room. The room is rather big and apart from the bed I'll just have my sofa+table+TV-set, my piano, stereo and possibly a comfy chair in that room. I want to "hide" my bed. Any good ideas how I might go about that would be greatly appreciated!

Have you thought about hanging curtians?
In my head it would look really nice.

yeah, possibly... but in a way I'd like something that doesn't move, like a screen/fake wall kind of thing or shelves... hmm...

i saw somewhere (possibly trading spaces) a room divider made of album covers. my mind is sketchy but i think they had grommets in each corner and then they were attached with jump rings to form a "screen." i thought it looked pretty bitchin'!

Yeah, actually anything with jump rings would work, playing cards, laminated art, fabric or magazine covers. Also tall plants and lamps or a double sided bookshelf.

go to a salvage shop, and get a bunch of old cool doors, maybe where you can remoe a window or slats to decorate. then hinge them together, like a screen, and you have a stable, neat looking door divider!

ps tweeter: thanks for the bitchin usage. haven't heard that term in a while! :)

wow, great ideas!!!! keep them coming!!!
The only thing I'd thought of was the double sided bookshelf with plants unless it's too dark - it's a few yards from the windows? I also *very* much like the laminated artwork idea.

A lot of small import stores (the ones that sell really cheap throw blankets, and chopsticks, and placemats, etc.) often will have Japanese screens for cheap, like $29-49 Canadian with nice black wood and beautiful white and cream paper inlays. Lets light through.

I have the book "Making and Decorating Screens" by Marion Elliot, and it's got some good ideas in there.

What about three sets of canvas stretcher bars (used for artwork), staple fabric to them, and hinge them together with some basic hinges?

For an outdoorsy look you can get bamboo dividers from Ikea.

I've always loved the bedroom of the character Maria de salle (sp?) in the movie High Fidelity. Essentially it's a big loft and the "bedroom" is created by hanging loads of window frames with frosted? glass in them. Essentially you could see someone in there but not through the windows, and it made a super arty wall.

It's a pretty funny movie too :)

I have a great book from the 60s with some great dividers that (at the time, at least) look really cheap to make. I will try to scan them in and send to you.

I madfe a screen using three pieces of MDF and piano hinges. I was then going to wallpaper it.

BUT it's *really* heavy - the MDF has to be rather thick. And i put one of the hinges on the wrong way, so it doesn't shut properly.

I'm going to try getting some garden trellises next and have a bit of a play. And I always keep an eye out of the old-style hospital dividers (on wheels).

I always thought if I needed a room divider I would make one of stretched canvas and paint it(I am a painter, so this natural).... I make my stretchers out of brick molding, so that would make them portable, yet very sturdy...
