Topic Second Annual Glitter Scarf Drive Go to previous topic Go to next topic Go to higher level

By cowgirly On 09/19/03

Well it's that time of year again!! Time to break out the fleece, wool, sewing machine, crochet hook, knitting needles and loom...and create beautiful scarves to donate to the (now annual!) Glitter Holiday Scarf Drive.

Last year we collected over 100 gorgeous handmade scarves by crafty people from all over the world- glitterati and non-glitterati, young and old, individuals and groups. Pics here: http://getcrafty.com/read/craft/features/craftingforcharity/index.html The scarves were donated to two programs serving women in need: TLC (women & mothers with mental illness) and Sanctuary For Families (a haven for abused women/mothers and their children). Ideas for organizations in the NYC area are most welcome.

Please volunteer some time and energy to creating beautiful scarf(s) to keep a woman warm and happy this winter:

1. Please make sure the scarf is adult-sized
2. Please add a hangtag/giftag/notecard stating the fiber content and a little note from the crafter
3. Please roll or fold the scarf and tie it with ribbon or yarn (see pics on above mentioned page). Do not giftwrap-- the women should be able to see the colors/tetxtures and choose accordingly, but the scarves do need to be bundled up.

Send to:

**Scarves must be received by December 10, 2003.**

Thanks ya'll!

ja know i'm in.

By headbunnie On 09/19/03

is it okay if i'm not the best crocheter yet? if it's made with love, it'll still be warm, right?

just need a little encouragement for the not-too-great-at-the-scarf-making kids...

By cowgirly On 09/19/03

Oh you bet!
The whole point is to give a handmade, warm, happy gift to a woman who otherwise might not get any during the holiday season. So infuse it with love and it will be gratefully accepted!

I'm so excited to hear that this is happening again! I've already started one in hopes that there would be another scarf drive. Whee!

By naturallysteph On 09/19/03

Yay! I'm so glad that you are doing this again! I missed out on it last year (joined Glitter too late), but I already have a nice crocheted scarf to send.

I'll package it up and ship it out immediately.

I'm in.

By jeansweasel On 09/19/03

Yay!!! Scarf time!!! Would they take adult-size hats, too??

ETA: I only ask about the hats because I have a bunch of them in a drawer.....I made too many last spring in my crochet-fever!

By invisilurker On 09/19/03

Hey cool! I was sad because I missed the last one...I found this place too late to join.
I learned to crochet and made myself a scarf, and I'm doing sewing, so maybe I can make a few!

By fawne On 09/19/03

i crochet a scarf at least once a week (i'm a stay at home mama and have a bit of spare time). this will be a great way to give away all the scarves i've made. :)

By kazoogrrl On 09/19/03

Question - did people seem to like acrylic scarves too? I have a bunch of yarn to use up, but it's acrylic. It looks nice, and I thought it would be an easier material for the recipient to deal with (i.e. easy to toss in the wash as opposed to handwashing wool). But if acrylic is not popular, I'll pick up something else.

Thanks!

By plainmabel On 09/20/03

I told my mom about this b/c she's been crocheting scarves all year but didn't know where to donate them. She's going to be sending like 20 of them in! I wish I was that industrious, I'm pretty slow and may only get through one or two.

kazoogrrl, I'm guessing acrylic ones would be well-received -- some people are allergic to wool and the washability you mentioned is definitely a plus!

Awesome, I have a few made already that I can send your way. :P

quick question: What are the dimensions for adult-sized scarves exactly? I like long skinny ones, so I have no idea what a "normal" size is.

By gadgetgirl On 09/21/03

No such thing as a 'normal' scarf. I did a couple last year and they were all different. Do what you like! I'd just think of them as more of an item to keep someone warm as opposed to a fashion accessory, ya know?

BTW, I'm in too.

Glad for all the positive responses!!

Acrylic is fine, any material is fine. A handmade scarf of any nature will keep the recipient warm and hopefully will bring her joy.

Sure, send hats too, if you have them. Donations of all kinds will be appreciated...

I sometimes feel so left out for not being a knitter or crocheter. Sigh.

I suppose though that sewn scarves are also accepted??

By danielepea On 09/22/03

Is it time to start knitting scarves again already? I could have sworn it was still the middle of summer! Well there's nothing like a good cause to get me to pick up my yarn. I'm very happy to hear we are doing this again this year! ;o)

"I suppose though that sewn scarves are also accepted?? "

I'm guessing that yup, sewn ones are just fine!
"...Time to break out the fleece, wool, sewing machine, crochet hook, knitting needles and loom..."
Sounds like it from that bit of the announcement. =]

I make long and skinny scarves as well..just cuz I like how they look. To figure out how long to make it, I wrap it once around my neck and see if I like where it's at. If I don't think it's long enough, I keep going.
Do they need ones for kids too?

By cowgirly On 09/24/03

Nope, no kids scarves for this drive. It's mainly for women who otherwise wouldn't get gifts during the holiday season...there are lots of toy drives for children but moms/women need to feel special too!

Craft on good people!

Ahh okay! Good Point. Just checking. So far I got one adult scarf done. =]

By headbunnie On 09/25/03

okay, so i've already admitted to being a beginner at the crochet (the two needles of knitting just plain scare me), but i got yarn yesterday and started a scarf - no pattern of course (as i've realized i don't have the patience for that - i prefer to just go and make stiches in the direction i want to make them)....anyway, i really like it and think i may have to make a second one to keep!

thanks for inspiring me to try and get a project done. i hope to have time to make another one before the deadline!

By MizMosa On 09/25/03

bump!

By glamsoda On 09/25/03

!!!

I would love to participate in this! Last year, I made scarves for family and friends for Xmas and I wanted to make more, but had no idea what to do with them. I live in SoCal, so there's little need for a lot of scarves! But now I can knit like crazy and help a great cause! Whee! :)
