Topic serger instead of sewing machine? Go to previous topic Go to next topic Go to higher level

By little e On 07/25/03

i haven't sewn much in a long time, but i want to get back into it. my machine is close to 20 years old and the bobbin thread gets tangled every time i use the sucker. even right after i had the machine overhauled.

so, i'm considering buying a new machine. do you think that a serger is a good investment? i do prefer the finished edges that only a serger can do. will i be missing useful functionality that only a sewing machine can deliver?? i wish i knew more!!

please advise me! spanks.

i don't know anybody who uses a serger exclusively. i don't think you can do things like button holes, applique, quilting, embroidery, etc with them because they slice off the edges as they go. you can't serge in the middle of fabric unless you can wrangle a suitable fold.

i'm not a serger pro though-- my mum has one but i don't. somebody else might have better advice.

They do make modles now that you can remove the blade, and can go down to just two thread or up to 5.

I would be sure to go in and talk to a local person about the pros and cons, and see the modles available.

I deffinaly wouldn't be able to get by without my regular sewing machine.

I guess it also depends on what type of things your wanting to sew and how much of an investment you want to make.

I haven't bought one in a few years but last time I checked you can't JUST have a serger there are alot of things it just woulndt work well for (see; zippers, hems, topstiching) So i recommend getting a really good machine I love my serger but only in addition to my sewing machine and when I'm having a bad sewing day its much harder to pull out seams and re thread a serger than a sewing machine
