Inspired by something Sublime Stitcher posted on La Vida Craft, I decided to try my hand at silk ribbon embroidery and now I can't put it down. This is instantly gratifying and truly addictive. Anyone else got a silk ribbon monkey on their back?

I have been dying to try it after I saw what my sister-in-law could accomplish in such a short time, and it's just beautiful!

do tell more of this ribbon embroidery!

By rhinokey On 07/25/03

Is this using ribbon instead of thread and embroidering things with it, or embroidering designs onto silk ribbon?

Either way it sounds fun, do tell!

It's using ribbon instead of thread. Here's some links. Proceed at your own risk and DON'T SAY I didn't warn you:

Great links, lulabelle! I might have to give this a try soon. It looks like a cool project to add a bit of detail to a boring shirt I've got. Maybe I'll try to update some of the designs a bit, I'm not really a pansy and poppy kinda girl;)

I found loads of other links at the bottom of this page:

There are some beading links mixed in there too.

i'm so glad i found this thread, i think i'm going to start up again!

I did this several years ago ... got kits at JoAnn's to cover fabric buttons, used some goofy scraps of "watercolor"-ish looking prints, then did silk embroidery on them. I glued pinbacks to them instead of using them as shaft buttons. Gave away about a dozen of them to friends. Everyone got lots of compliments on them; some people thought they were sculpted out of clay! Certainly considered "art" more than craft, which was an incredible bonus to me, since I made most of them while I was sitting on the couch watching tv!

Now I've got a whole new batch of friends, so maybe I should pick that craft back up again before Christmas rolls around. Thanks for the reminder.

As has already been said here, it's AMAZING how gorgeous the results are with very few stitches and very little time!

Great thread! I picked up a book on the subject, but I haven't found a source for the ribbons yet- any tips?

KD-At Joanns they have them in the glass etching/textile art section.

If you thought it was adicting, look how many stitches there are in regular embroidery to adapt! http://home.iprimus.com.au/ijerry/sharonb/stitchdict/index.html ugh,I've been an embroiderer for years but now I'm in need of a a 12 step program!
