hi everyone... i'm kinda new here and i need some help.

my friends and myself just finished high school and are all heading off to different universities... 4 of us are quite close so we wanted to do something different to kinda prepare for the seperation so I sugested a crafty day... the only problem is that i am stuck on crafts to do...so far the list includes:
magnetic boards (as seen a couple pages back on glitter.. they are so cool)
marble magnets and magnetic poetry

they are not the most orginal of ideas....if anyone has any ideas at all they would be most appreciated!!!
Thanks

Just to throw these out there;
-buy/make cloth pencil cases, then hand-embroider them
-sets of postcards, for quick notes to each other
-fimo/sculpey pens-just those cheap pens where you can actually screw off the top and change the ink filler, cover them with thin layer of clay and bake
-paper lanterns
-old cd wind chimes. I think I saw this on CraftyChicaAZ's site, and there are some other great ideas on there as well.
-there was a thread on "Thing in a Jar" that's still kickin' around, which looked fun.

I'm in the same boat as you, and what I did for some friends was get some plain mugs from the dollar store, and decorate them with a silver Sharpie. Just little in-jokes and stuff, but they went over pretty well.

Good luck!

This is really freaky, I thought that one of my friends joined this board because we had the EXACT same idea! We were going to first go thrifting and to garage sales to pick up picture frames, boxes, and some other stuff to decorate. Picture frames are great because you can decorate them with your friends and then put pictures of them in it! There's a lot of stuff you can make with fabric, like pillows, covered cork boards, and decorated storage boxes.

great ideas. I second the postcard sets idea! you can also make awesome envelopes by making your own pattern (basically a modified rectangle w/ flaps that fold over for the sides; play around and you'll get a version that works). corresponding w/ friends after leaving for college, especially in the first few months was one of my favorite things. it rocks to have your own little postbox!

you could also buy photo albums and decorate the covers, or if you're up for it, bind your own.

there've been instructions on here on how to make your own flowered christmas lights - I think buy a bunch of silk flowers, remove the plastic stamens, and put over christmas light bulbs. these could look great in your new dorm rooms!

have fun,
charissa

To expound on moonunit426's post, picture frames are great for more than just pictures. A friend and I went thrifting for old picture frames, and found some wood ones with details that we liked. Then we went to Home Depot, and got pegboard and pegs. We cut the pegboard to fit into the frame (we just used a saw, although I did get impatient and just broke mine over my knee after scoring it), then painted the frame and pegboard funky colours with those acrylic craft paints. After they dried, we duct-taped the boards into the frames, then inserted the pegs, and voila! A unique, tangle free way to store your necklaces and bracelets!
We sort of hashed ours together, but I'm sure that you could make them really professional. And lots of larger frames come with the pegboard attached, and they don't need to actually be hung: I just sticky-tacked mine to the wall.

Hope this helps!
