I'm getting married next May and we have decided upon the theme of blue skies. You know like the song. My dress is a 40s pattern and we were thinking jazzy music. We wanted two main colors which will be teal (the color of my dress) and silver. The problem is, most of the bridal stuff out there makes me want to gag. Doves, lace, and precious moments cake toppers. Yuk. So we're going to be crafty and make a lot of the decorations ourselves.

We don't want to have too much stuff. It will be a small wedding, we're inviting 70 people. Its not for sure yet if the ceremony will be inside or not. I was thinking tulle clouds as centerpieces with butterflies, bluebirds, and some flowers with candy in the clouds for the kids. I also thought that we could line up the area leading to the ceremony with toy bluebirds with a piece of paper coming out of their mouths with our names on them. We are also thinking about making the invitations. I will be in SF in Aug. and there I will get the fabric for my dress and the wedding. I heard there's a 3-story fabric store, I don't remember the name.

I need give some ideas or recommendations to decorating and planning a "Blue Sky" wedding...you guys always have such fabulous ideas! Thanks!

How about making hot air balloon centerpieces. Basically, paper mache a balloon, and wire on a basket after it is dry and painted. You could do this with real balloons, but the kids would destroy them in 20 seconds flat.

The basket could hold candy, or a candle of some sort, though I would be cautious about flame and paper being that close together.

If you did this aspect of blue skies, you could make a little travel book for all the guests to sign and give their advice for your journey as a couple. I know it sounds cheesy, but people love giving advice at weddings.

What about blue carnation corsages for your flower girl, or bridesmaids? Put a few drops of blue food coloring in water and then cut the stems of the carnations at an angle and stick em in over night. I don't know if that counts as decorations...but hey, if it works.
Congrats and good luck!

I saw a magazine spread for a pool party recently where the placecards were polaroids of the sky with guests names handwritten on the bottom. I thought that was awesome, and perfect for your theme! Something like that could be nice for invitations as well if you aren't using placecards. (I didn't.)

p.s. Britex is the name of the store in S.F. And be forewarned... much of it is pricey!$!

i like the idea of the papier mache balloons...u could put little nite lights in the baskets.

or u could make butterflies...say 5 inches long...and put them on wire so they look like they are floating in the air...make them glittery...

helium balloons as centre pieces?

are u walking down the aisle? u could put fake clouds (of course, not real ones LOL) on either side of the aisle...
