I really like some of my t shirts although they don't flatter my figure too much...
A long time ago I was watching this fashion thing on MTV where Courtney Love talked about turning your t shirts into a more current style, like baby t's, halters etc.

I thought the idea was really neat although I am rather bad at sewing. Has anyone attempted to alter their tops, and if so, got any tips?

well, i was thinking about doing that as well!you mind reader you.i tried it and although it didnt turn out perfect it was alright but hey eventually i'll get it down to a science.
i just used scissors!i cut out the arms of a t-shirt and the back but i left some of the back on the t-shirt....i know i probably just confused u a bit but you just think of what a halter looks like....leave a neck hole thingie and some of the back on there and there u go a diy halter......now onto that baby-tee thingie.....i was thinking just cut off an 1/2-4 inches of any t-shirt depending on the length of the shirt then either leave it like that for a kinda messy-rocker grrl style or hem it so it looks nice and neat...then in either case u couls shrink it i'm not totally sure how to do this...probablly by washing it in hot water or something then drying it on full heat....but be careful cause i belive in karma and i dont think my karma would be very good if i was responsiable for a fire or something........have fun...i hope i helped and that u wont need too much therapy after having listened to me

Hello!

To make cap sleeves, just cut your tee's sleeves off at an angle. You can also cut off the collar of a crew tee for a different look.

If you have plain ol' boring white tees just pick up some Rit dye at the craft store or grocery store in the laundry section.

You can add flair to baby tees by slashing them randomly with scissors and pinning them with safety pins.

Get some fabric markers and go crazy.

If you have Bedazzler from way-back-when you could add studs or rhinestones around the collar, sleeves, or bottom hem.

An idea I just recently thought of was to get some decorative fringe at a craft store and sew it along the edges of the sleeves, bottom hem, and even the collar. Since you said you're bad at sewing you could just pick up some no-sew glue at the craft store.

I hope I helped in some way, shape, or form!

i just made an old tee shirt into a halter, so here's my input: i had this great shirt i got a few years ago, it's got handpainted pandas on it, it's really cute. but it's big, so i never wore it.

what i did was cut the front of the shirt off, as in cut off the sleeves and slice up the side seams and the shoulder seams. then you have your fabric for the front. now cut that fabric into a sort of trapezoid type thing. (i'm going to try to type it out here, i don't know if it'll work though:

the neck part should be fairly big, like maybe 8 inches across. the bottom should be as wide as the front of the shirt.
now, sew a casing for the string at the top, and push a ribbon or something through it. it ties around your neck, with the front gathering a bit.

work with it until it fits right, and sew a panel across the back, just a square really.

i hope that makes sense sort of.

i love turning my old shirts into new stuff!
the easiest is turning an old shirt into a tube top, cut off the top and sleeves and make it tighter and poof!
i also cut up plain shirts make em into tubes andthen cut off the printed part froma nother shirt and sew it onto the tube top
or a really really easy halter? just make a tube top and attach some ribbon to tie around ur neck or as straps

The problem I have when I attempt to make tube tops is that they always stretch out and get too baggy after a while. Do you sew elastic onto the top and bottom edges or do you just make sure that you use a tight enough top?

okay so it didn't work, ah well.

i just use a tight enough shirt
my friend uses ribbon though and sorta makes like a drawstring on the top of the tube too that looks pretty cute as well
