I want to know what kind of paint I can use to paint my computer. I saw this done once in a movie. That fine cinematic piece Hackers, but I don't know how to go about this in real life. Any suggestions?

I'm thinking of Astroturfing my computer...maybe some fake fur around the monitor...

i really want to spraypaint my crappy laptop black, and stencil a neon orange skull and crossbones on it. now that the battery doesnt hold a charge, and the memory is almost maxed out, i dont have much to loose...

Computers take modifications very well....paint, sanding, cutting out parts..etc.....people deck them out all the time....

any tips on what you can do to your case/monitor/keyboard that won't void the warranty? the astroturf sounds rockin, but i don't want to steal ideas.

(ok well not that you'd ever know if i did, but you get the point...)

By cowgirly On 04/18/01

Don't know about voiding a warranty, I haven't had a new computer in years- my "new" mac is a hand-me-down, which is why I'm ok with astroturfing it. You might want to check with the company you bought your system from, but I think that as long as you don't open anything that shouldn't be opened, ie the monitor casing, mouse casing, ect, you should be fine. I can't imagine them having a problem with add-ons, but who knows.

Just be sure to leave air holes for the computer to breathe, otherwise it'll overheat. I also think covering a computer case with some really great fabric, like a textured silk or something, would be fab!

By stella On 04/18/01

you should probably leave any vents in the body of the computer or monitor completely uncovered. overheating is not a good thing, as i found out when the vents on the old computer got filled up with dust...

I go to lan party's all the time..and there are some pretty crafty nerd guys out there..One guy, a world war two freak painted his 'puter army green with the stripes they put on wwII planes on both sides (it was a tower) On the top he put a very well done runway with a model war plane on top.. the thing was incredible. Since I'm the only girl at most of these lan party's, I have to declare my feminism in a nice strong manner. My 'puter is, affectonitly decorated with pictures I've taken. (the monitor is) On either side of my tower, I've painted a huge pink tiara. Also, On top of the tower is a tiara I won in miss herself pagent (something my freinds and I hold..we pass around the tiara every year..)

I love my puter..One step in my quest to be myself. (I love me..)

well, I've seen computer moniter covers in magazines and stuff that you can by, so I'm sure you can make something like that. Maybe with some faux fur or something like that.

By cowgirly On 04/19/01

Wow, I wonder what it would be like to design a website while working on a monitor decorated with fake fur!! I think it would end up much more creative than without the fur.

Aliceinwonderland, I've never heard of a grrl going to a LAN party, let alone with a tiara-bedecked computer. You rock!

I found some instructions on painting the monitor.

This month's issue of "Maximum PC" has exactly what you're looking for. They show you how to paint everything, even the CD drive, etc, and how to prep it so that you don't lose the logos and all. They painted their machine a metallic ice blue and called it "The Iceman!" LOL

I just woke up so sorry if I'm not making any sense...BUT...

first off, computers take to just about anything really well. as long your not tossing it out your window (even though some people SHOULD) you should be ok. my computers have been though hell and back, I just the other found the missing side panel to my secondary computer. (cheers for me!)

my only worry is this: don't do shit if your leasing your computer. got a gateway? DON'T PAINT IT. See they (and other companies as well!) reuse parts, and if you want to upgrade your systems (which I think they do for you free or something, every two years..) its going to piss them off to trying to match a hot pink cd-rom into a normal grey case..

So unless yours is a clone which you know your never ever going to try to sell in a million years, avoid the hassel...

which makes me wana ask.. anyone thought of computer cozzies?! *L* as long as it doesn't cover the back, as stella was saying..that would be cool. like undies or something for a comp...

<somewhat o/t>Voguevixen, that's sooo cool you read MaxPC! I do freelance copy editing for them, and you're the first person I've run into who actually reads it! Glad you liked the Sub-Zero--the guy who did it had a lot of fun painting it.

Back on topic, I would think painting a plastic case would be even easier than a metal one (no primer?). As for gussying up a monitor, I've seen really cheesy monitor frames that attach with velcro. While the ones at Target are dumb, I'm sure a crafty gal or guy could make a very cool one ... I'm thinking something with pockets for my Trixie from "Speed Racer" doll to hang out of. I'm a big fan of velcro in general, and I have tiny Fimo dragonflies and happy rocks velcroed to my monitor right now.

By CraftyChicaAZ On 05/04/01

you can totally do it! i have a friend who did it and it came out way cool. Here is the link:http://www.azfamily.com/gmaz/terri/archives/20010120.html

I have my monitor decorated with glow in the dark stars. I need to get more, cuz my roomie would only part with a few from her collection. :-)
