Topic Dyeing my comforter? Go to previous topic Go to next topic Go to higher level

By samson On 10/22/02

So I have this hideous king size comforter. I've had for 12 years. I can't afford a new one, but the peach color is driving me insane. Is it possible to dye this monster? Oh, I also am guessing that its cotton polyester. The tags are long gone, but that's what I would guess.

I'm thinking dye would end up getting everywhere, the sheets, the wall, etc. Is this a bad idea? Suggestions on a dye? I really don't even care how it comes out, as long as it isn't peach anymore.

I hate duvet covers, by the way.

Thanks!

i'd be really afraid to dye it, but i've never had much luck with dyes, and synthetics don't take dye well, i think. i was gonna suggest making a duvet cover out of 2 flat sheets until i saw your last sentence...maybe you could stitch a flat sheet directly to the top (and bottom, if it's reversable) of the comforter, around the edges?

Yeah, it seems like a bad idea to me too. Heh.

I was also thinking of stitching a sheet or other fabric onto it. I'm no good at sewing, but maybe I'll give it a try. It really could not get any uglier, so no big loss.

Do you think stitching fabric to it, with maybe stitches every 5-10 square inches would work? It seems like a lot of comforters are sewn that way, but like I said, I'm no seamstress...

why do you hate duvet covers? Is it b/c the blanket tends to bunch inside the duvet? B/c my mom has made blanket covers by making essentially what is a giant pillow case for a wool blanket, inserting the blanket, and then anchoring it down with stitches on the open end. Big baste sized stitches, this way she can wash the outside without ruining the wool blanket, and it's not really a duvet...

yes, i think putting a stitch every 5" or so would work to anchor the sheet to the comforter. you mean going through the whole thing, right, all the layers, and tying off each stitch individually? there's a name for that, but i can't remember it. any quilters out there wanna pipe up?

another thing i thought of was maybe painting something on it w/ fabric paint, maybe do something really funky, or abstract, or impressionistic if you can't draw (which i most surely can NOT!) you could leave as little or as much of the dreaded peach showing as you liked. it actually sounds kinda fun! hell, paint up some pillow shams to coordinate while you're at it, and curtains, and el-cheapo cotton rugs (or a floor cloth using the backside of a vinyl flooring scrap)...you'll probably be getting orders for "custom painted boudoir ensembles" when you're done! *grin*

Yeah, I hate them because the blankie moves around. I didn't even use a flat sheet until I lived with my boy, because multiple layers get my ire up. I get very frustrated in bed. Ha ha. I thought about sewing one end down, could be okay...

Yes, pixie, that's what I was imagining. Problably with contrasting thread. That would look cool. It doesn't seem too hard, but that's what I always think before I try to sew something.

Har har har, "custom budiour esembles"! I'll have to think about that. Fabric paint can be very scary in the wrong hands.

Thanks guys!

Sepia,
My blanket doesn't shift around alot. You should try the basted on duvet, it should be ok, and I don't use a flat sheet either :)

My grandmother would sort of cheat quilt! She would take an old blanket and buy 2 sheets in a pattern she liked. She would then make a duvet with the sheets then put the blanket in then sew all around the edges, new duvet to blanket. She would them 'quilt it' with buttons or a straight stitch wherever or following the pattern on the fabric or make little embroidered french knots all over the place. they looked cute and she was still able to throw the comforter in the wash!
I'd have to say dyeing may make more trouble than it's worth.
