By kungfugirl On 09/23/02

Wuzzled's long hair post made me wonder what you guys prefer both personally and in general. I've been growing mine out for the last few months and it's in that dumb middle stage where it just hangs there, and I'm this close to cutting it all off again.

But... things I like about long hair are that it's low maintenance, it's pretty in an old fashioned, natural kind of way (meaning you can do nothing to it and use no styling products, and you look fresh and pretty, unlike if you try not to do anything with short and it winds up looking like a flat multi-layered mess or if you're like me a giant cowlick), and as a result it usually looks so much sexier when you roll out of bed.

I never feel cool or stylish with long hair, though. It's harder to distinguish yourself, and usually relies on having a strong sense of fashion, which I don't have. With a good, short haircut you can wear old gap clothes and still look hip.

Anyway, I've had both, and I've found that I get noticed by guys a lot more when my hair's long, but the quality of guy who notices me is always much better when it's short. My boyfriend prefers short, but I haven't had hair this long in 5 years, and I'm not sure I want to give up growing it now. I think cool girls usually look at me more when it's short, but I feel more comfortable with it long.

I REALLY want to find a cool long hair style that's not all one length and is sort of punk, but I haven't seen many straight styles I like (curly haired girls seem to have more hip options).

Anyway, what's your hair length and how do you want it to be?

By UnsafeBuilding On 09/23/02

Mine's about shoulder length now. I'm not doing anything with it until April. Then, i might cut it for basic.

I like it at least shoulder length. It used to be waist length, which meant on the occasion i did something with it, it took a while.

By samson On 09/23/02

I said this not too long ago...I always get tons more attention with shorter hair. From a buzz to shaggy and cute to bob with bangs. I think it's because it looks better on me, not because of any male preference. I suppose, in general, they like long hair. But I've always dated guys who prefer short or don't care.

Mine's between clavicle and boob length. I used to have it very similar to this for awhile and I want to go back soon... http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/ricklehead/lst?.dir=/HairDo!&.src=ph&.order=&.view=t&.done=http%3a//photos.yahoo.com/

and then I want to go back to boyish short probably. I think a fucked up pixie cut is my all time favorite hairstyle for me. It flatters me and it's easy and it's hard to look conservative, which I like. I'm always afraid my long hair makes me look too normal, poo.

oops, maybe this works better, it's in the hairdo folder, naturally... http://photos.yahoo.com/ricklehead

my hair is medium-shortish, but shorter in back. i have a reverse mullet. just kidding... it's just that i'm trying to grow my hair out, and it gets all curly and weird in back, while the front stays fairly normal, so i have to have the back layered up. i cut all my hair off to an inch last november in a fit of weirdness, and now i'm just waiting for it to be decent again. i had waist length or longer hair until i was 13 or 14, and i've had enough of that. i have very thick hair, so it takes half a bottle of shampoo to get it clean and then takes a day and a half to dry. and it weighs a ton.

i think lots of men prefer longer hair. i don't know, maybe it's less threatening to their masculinity or something. i like the convenience of super-short hair, but unfortunately i look awful with it. my sister shaves her head (well, right now she has 1/2 inch hair that tapers into a side mohawk) and she looks beautiful. i just can't pull it off. in general, it just depends on the person. i tend to prefer short to medium length hair on women, but some have beautiful long hair. the only thing i HATE is when women have long hair that is gelled into stringy, spirally curls. long hair should not be crunchy.

i think guys just like it when a girl looks "softer." society has this notion that if you wanna be "edgy" you have to cut your hair off. i personally feel that a person with their hair short appear more confident and honest because they don't have their hair to hide behind. and i love the idea of taking a shower in the morning and my hair being mostly dry by the time i walk out the door.

my hair is currently above chin length all around, and i'm hoping to grow out my bangs. eventually i'd like to have one of those bob cuts where my bangs are longer than the back. but i think i've had the most fun when i had a pixie, and i'm itching to cut and color my hair again. :)

About two months ago I had waist long hair extensions. I got them because I was tired of waiting for my just-past-the-shoulder length hair to grow. I was miserable. It's such a bitch to take care of long hair, and I hate how it covers half your body in this itchy mass or fur. I spent a whole night taking them out by myself rather than waiting a few more weeks to go to the salon (good-bye to the $150 I spent) but it was worth it.
Two weeks later I chopped all my hair off to about ear length in spiky, choppy layers and dyed it black with red streaks. I love it! I have to take care of it or it looks like shit, but it's lighter, airier and more fun. I can do more things with it, and I just feel more punk all over, so it goes with my clothes which are usually quite punk. I love short hair.

Edited to add: Januarygrl, if you're willing to spend a few buck on your hair, I can reccommend a *great* stylist! He's amazing and he might you give you a pretty good deal because I referred you and we've become pretty good friends. Let me know. :)

By januarygrl On 09/23/02

grace: yes please! i've lived in la for two years and i've resorted to supercuts one too many times because i can't find a decent, fairly inexpensive stylist in the area!

thanks in advance! *mwah!*

I have about shoulder length hair...I got it cut about a month 1/2 ago...It's a little bit choppy and I have long bangs...It's hard to explain but I had the stylist incorporate 5 different styles into one and it looks awesome...I get bored easy though...I would LOVE to have short shaggy hair but I look terrible with short hair.

**edited to ask : grace do you have a picture of your hair cut? or a pic of someone with a cut like it? It sounds exactly how I've been wanting it**

By amphoteric On 09/23/02

i love both, and am trying to stop changing it between them every few months. i also love both on other people

long hair dyes less well, but short hair doesn't show off my Nice Hair as well. short hair is cute, but my clothes are too sexless and the resulting look is butch, which i'm really not at all.

currently, my hair is just passing my shoulders, almost, and i've got a blunt fringe, which i sometimes sweep off to one side, and am thinking of growing/cutting it to do this full-time, but then i see someone else with my former style, and we're on the fucking rollercoaster to inbetweeny growing-out once again. it's pink, too, which does big favours for long-hair health, not. i think i want it long, but not to wear down.

oh, and my hair is really goddamn straight.

i think i want several heads, really. much as i loathe barbie, i was playing with my 4-y-o cousin's dolls on saturday, styling their hair, and would like to be able to go from scissors-attacked barbie to southern-belle barbie to surprisingly-gothy barbie at will.

i just posted this in the other hair thread, but since you specifically asked:

i have hair down to my breasts, and just got an amazing haircut from bumble and bumble. i was a hair model so it was free too! they used a straight razor and cut layers starting from my jaw down. very textured and fun, messy in a good way. the short layers just curled right up. i can still wear braids, barrettes, all my favorite long haired looks, it's just easier to take care of, has more body, and looks way more interesting when it's all down.

so that's my advice - choppy long layers.

Right now my hair is relaxed..i've had it this way for about a year now. I sort of want to go back to having a cute little afro but i'm not sure if thats gonna work because of my relaxed hair but i'm willing to try. I read sa quote somewhere a while back that said something like "at one point in their life, everybody should shave their head"...lol, I guess this is about the closest i'll get. I'm a little weary because I know how a lot of guys like long, flowing hair on girls and many of them say it looks sexy in the morning and they can play with it etc..but for once i'd like to be able to wash my own goddamned hair; right now I go to the hairdresser ever 2 weeks to get it washed and blowdried and that money is adding up. The way I see it anyways, I can do way more stuff if I have my natrual fro...wash it, make it smell the way I want, color it without having to worry about it falling out..and in 2 years i'll be off to college so I need something that I can actually manage :P

By hightide On 09/23/02

I'm doing the grow-it-out too, and it's making me a little bit crazy, but I want it over my ears and neck for winter. I had very long hair for most of my life and it's really not that low maintenance in retrospect. I second your observation about the quality of guy long/short hair attracts - I get the same amount of attention, but from a different type (seems like a lot of jocks like the short hair too).

If you feel more comfortable with long hair, stick with growing it out.

By xcarolinex On 09/23/02

My hair's just past chin length right now. I just got it cut maybe 3 weeks ago, and the girl did yucky things with it. It's really thick, but not in the pretty way and gets pretty damn huge sometimes. Wait, I meant all of the time. So yeah, she basically refused to layer it for me at that length, yet angled it really short (just past my eyes) in the front. Then she put a huge squirt of wax in it to hold it down.
I got home, washed the wax out and whipped out the dog grooming scissors. Layered it, de-fucked-up the angling, and now I love it. I want it shorter though, hehe.
My hair's a huge pain when it's long. With this length, I can do even less work and make it look a little better. Wash, condition, Frizz-Ease, put some wax on the ends. Good stuff.

It's kinda funny how attached I can get to my hair, scary at the same time though. I had, up until last week, hair down to my mid-back. Now it's around my ears in choppy layers. I love it. It's kinda nice to have a style. Takes longer than a bun though, kinda sucky. I do this whole funky thing where I grow my hair out long and then cut it short. Long...short. It's a vicious cycle. My husband says he likes it both ways. Right answer. Don't you just love the feeling you get for weeks after cutting your hair? Ahhh, happy.

i was growing out my hair for about 6 mos earlier this year before i buckled and chopped it off again. it almost got down to my ears and then i realized that, while i had great long hair, it's not for me anymore. my hair is now about 1" on top and may 1/2"-1/4" everywhere else. my barber (well, he's at visible changes so i guess he's a *stylist*) cuts all of it with a razor... i used to have it shaved at a 2 everywhere except up top, but the razor adds more texture and is less defined... so i don't feel so militant (in the military sense, not the lesbian sense). i also run a highlighting mousse through it to lighten it up a bit.
anyway, i always get nothing but compliments and i feel great now that i've realized i never have to grow out my hair again because i've found what suits me. i don't think i could handle having longer hair and dealing with all the upkeep... i salute anyone with that much patience!

By jodysomething On 09/24/02

I love long hair. Short hair looks super cute on some girlz, but it just makes me look like a man.

Trouble is, I can never seem to grow it. I'm seriously thinking of shaving it all off and getting a wig.

By RetroDame On 09/24/02

I go through phases.

Right now I have short hair... it's about chin length in the front, clipped against my neck in the back. I love it. It falls in my face in a way that makes me feel really sexy, I never have to do a thing to it except keep it trimmed. Occasionally, I catch it doing this poofy tv newsperson kind of thing, but a bit of pomade always solves the problem.

But, I kind of miss my long hair. I used to put it in pigtails and stuff all the time, barrettes, etc.

I may grow my hair out again next year.

By mollie On 09/24/02

i dislike long hair unless it's really nice, healthy, shiny, well-cut and well-groomed. then it can be absolutely stunning. i would like to try growing mine out, but i don't have the patience. and i like my choppy chin-length amelie-esque cut. much to my amazement, i get complimented a lot. not bad for someone who's been cutting her own hair since 1996!*

*if you master the home cut, you can afford to be a styling product whore!

By heathertea On 09/24/02

oh mollie! I totally agree. I've pretty much mastered the home cut (and I've actually got the amelie-esque cut as well, with out the short bangs, mine sweep across my forehead) just so that I can justify it to myself when I buy lots of styling products. An ex-boy of mine used to refuse to let me go down the beauty-product isle when we went grocery shopping because I'd be there for an hour!

By danielepea On 09/24/02

I'm another one caught up in the long/short cycle. I think that I always have been - even in grade school. The most dramatic haircut I ever got was during winter break my junior year of college. I went from waist-length to Winona Ryder circa Girl,Interrupted in a single afternoon. My hair dresser loves my hair short and actually thanked me for letting her cut it so short that day! I like having short hair right after I get it cut, but my hair grows too fast for me to keep up with getting trims to keep the style.

Right now my hair is just past my shoulder blades and I am starting to get the itch to cut it again. Maybe something chin length?

By mollie On 09/24/02

daniele, that would be cute!

By oldskoolgeek On 09/24/02

My mom used to have long black Cher hair and I only wished that I could have that, but instead I got my dad's thick thick wavy frizzy hair.
I usually change hairstyles every 3 to 6 months -- not so much out of want, but when my hair is growing out of one style I just look a mess.

In early HS I just went and cut it really short one day -- it was only an inch long and very spikey and cool looking, but this was when everyone else was having Jennifer Aniston haircuts so ended up letting it grow out long again and then grew it my waist by the time I was 19. Since then it has been short, long, short, long off and on again and I'm just so tired of it. Why can't I just wear a wig every day? Why won't my dumb hair stop growing when I get a cute haircut?!!

Back in March I got the Amelie cut and everyone remarked how fabulous it looked, but after about 3 weeks I started having major wings and the poofiness set it and I was getting tired of using the flat iron everyday to try to make it straight.
So now it has grown into a hairstyle that can probably not be described as anything other than Roger Daltry hair circa Tommy!!! (and you have no idea how embarrassed I am to even type that!)

Are there any websites out there with cute hairstyles or do any of you have saved clips of hairstyles you like that you could provide links for?
Any suggestions for a girl with shoulder length layered wavy frizzy hair? One lady in my office said getting a perm would bring out my curls and would be much less frizzy -- I don't know if I should trust that information or not. Any help?

By SublimeStitcher On 09/24/02

I prefer to have my hair in a pixie cut (about 1" long) because:

i hate having to wash / comb / dry / style
my hair, which is super baby fine, but I have *tons* of it. So, it's really, really hard to rinse, comb when it's wet, it tangles and breaks easily.

I hate having hair in my face.
It's too hot in Austin for me and long hair.

But, I do like how I look with long hair, and my husband asked me sheepishly if I was going to grow it out long again anytime soon. So I'm doing it for love. But, actually, I like it.

The hairdo I want right now - has anyone seen that commercial with the woman looking at the wall of shampoo and the voice over is saying "ylang ylang?" She has black hair, with layered bangs....I want that hair style.

Deep topics I'm posting to today!

By samson On 09/24/02

SS- I have hair like yours. It's so friggin' annoying! I haven't seen that commercial, but I'm very intrigued.

By heathertea On 09/24/02

oldskool- I have naturally curly hair that is curly in some places and wavy/straight/frizzy in others. I've gotten perms before, though not for years, and yeah, they do kinda make the hair over-all equal in curlyness. However, if your hair is already frizzy the perm might dry it out. You'd want to have it professionally done, I'd think. Also, to keep my hair from looking like a frizzy mess I always use paul mitchel leave in conditioner and keep my hair cut short, so there's less chance of it getting long and dried out. =)
