i have a really nice pair of trouser which i am wearing to the deather...bvut i cant find any patterns similar...or the same pants anywhere.

i have heard of people using thier favourite pants as a template and 'tracing' around them and constructing an almost identical pair from the template.

has anyone ever done this? know any websites?

(if this has been a post before im sorry)

I had a coat once with a really yuckie lining in it. I ripped out the lining and used it as a pattern to make the new one. It worked really well. If you sew at all I would think you could do it easily. The only thing is, I don't think you can do it without taking apart the pair of pants that you love. I don't think you can just trace them cause of the butt and stuff. The pattern is most likely a weird shape.

You *can*, it's just a challenge. You have to make sure you get it all in there, as it would be if it were flat. Obviously it works better if you take them apart.

The problem is, sometimes when you go to all the work to remake something, you discover that it was a magical combination of not just the pattern, but the fabric and wearing and other things you can't necessarily duplicate that made the original article so perfect.

I don't have a good site for you but I do know that at my local community college that have a class on how to make patterns from existing clothing, you might look into something like that in your area

there's even a book,"making patterns from finished clothes" by Rusty Bensussen.

With pants, there are four pieces, and the front two are the same (just opposite)- likewise the back two. The back pieces have a much deeper crotch seam to make room for the butt. I would say making a pattern off of you old pants is definitely worth a try, but maybe start with fabric that isn't dear to you. That way, you won't regret your mistakes, if you make any. Pants are not hard to make, once you get the hang of it. I even figured out how to make a Carrhart's style fly from carefully taking one apart, and making good notes...
good luck!
