Topic "glitterati" - who knew!? Go to previous topic Go to next topic Go to higher level

By podge On 08/30/02

o.k. so some of you are going to be all "no duh!", but it was a total revelation for me. I actually felt like a bit of a boob at first, but then I asked around and I was not alone in my ignorance...o.k. get to the point, jen.

so i'm looking up "glaucoma" in the dictionary, and my eye wanders across...none other than our beloved "glitterati"!

i'm so sure when people started using this, they knew, but here's the definition for those in the dark:

The leaders of society, especially the rich and beautiful; fashionable celebrities.

how bout that!?

to make you feel like less of a boob: i had no idea! that's really cool, although i think we take the elitist connotation out of the word.

i just hate it when you're surfing past E! or such and they're talking about the Oscars or another big event and they say something like "All the glitterati were there!" Because then i go, "Oh yeah?!?" and then i'm disappointed because they mean like famous people. {:6

and i just thought glitterati was a candy that my mom gets at the place she luncheons at...

Pretty interesting ;) That would be a neat show on E! with all of us walking down the red carpet in our thrifted or crafted finery.

we should hold our own gliteratie gala complete with awards for "best recipie" "longest poster" "most poster" and make sure everyone gets an award.

We could have kitting needles in gold yarn as the trophies.

I thought we made up the word....but I kept reading it in fashion magazines and going 'oh hey! they came up with it too' heh heh

Hey girly-I had no idea either!!!
But you were smarter than me to look it up to see exactly what it did mean!!

scubaslug!

i was so proud of myself when I mail ordered a pound of that candy ( a pricey pound, I might add) so that I could add it to my glitterati packages. Then, I spot it at Trader Joe's!! I was kinda bummed because I thought I'd found something hard to get. (We don't have Trader Joe's around me.)

I first heard the word used in a Pink Floyd song, of all strange contexts: "The Fletcher Memorial Home" on Side 2 of the Final Cut . . .

"and now, adding colour/a group of anonymous latin
american meat packing glitterati"

Kinda appropriate, no?
