I was just talking about this with a co-worker. I don't get it either -- whether or not we actually fired the all-important first shot, we were still defending ourselves from an attack. We didn't go there and shoot, they came into our territory and got shot by us. The saddest part is that no matter how it happened with the sub, they weren't able to get a report back to the battleship before the real Pearl Harbor attacks started. (The sub thing apparently happened like an hour beforehand.) Think how many lives could have been saved!
