Topic crafting with vintage playboys Go to previous topic Go to next topic Go to higher level

Hi, I have an idea, but I'm not sure how to execute it. Someone recently gave me a 1979 Playboy (Raquel Welch on the cover!) I was thinking about cutting out a whole bunch of pics from it -- probably the ads mostly, and maybe some of the layout pics -- and gluing them onto this small unfinished wood nightstand/end table. I want to completely cover the table. My question is, what kind of glue would work best, and should I spray it with something after I'm finished gluing? I'd appreciate any other input! Thanks.

Damn--I wouldn't cut that up! It might be worth something. Consult Ebay before you do anything rash.

mod-podge

all though, i wouldn't cut it up either!

I did check eBay, and unfortunately it's not worth much. A 1955 Playboy is only going for $10, and a 1978 copy is less than $6. I figure I can make better use of it by gluing the pics on this little table. So, Mod Podge? OK. (I'm pretty much a beginner at this crafty stuff, by the way.)

yes Mod Podge the suka and then make sure you varnish! It will protect the whole thing, and it comes in spray can form. Easy indeed!

My thought on reading the topic line?

I bet you'll have an interesting conversation with 'em while you knit!

try a foam brush with your modpodge, I find you get nice, smooth results.

I recently did a "girlie shrine" for a friend and used old hoochie mama pics in a hinged box with a candle and lots of glitter and sequins.

You might want to consider a light misting of spray glitter (maybe the irridescent) before you seal it, that would be very sexy ;)

I don't know if it will run, bit you may want to thing about making color copies, rather than cutting it up....

I also thinking great xmas gift for the boy!

laser copies wouldn't run, ink one's would.

After reading your topic line, I had to tell you that I think that your idea is awesome and it reminds me of this piece of artwork that I saw at the Art Institute in Chicago, in the Contemporary section. There's this woman who machine embroiders the outlines of nude women from cheap pornography onto large pieces of vibrant fabric - the design repeats and you don't really realize what you're looking at until you take a closer look. Anyway, I'll try to find the name of the artist, it's driving me nuts, and GOOD FOR YOU.

color copies won't run. definitely do that.

i've done a few large decoupage things and i have a few suggestions. lemme try to search for an old thread before i repost it all...

first thing - do not use mod podge. i hate that stuff. i never use it. i always use either ailene's or plaid's decoupage glue. and yes foam brushes. (i know mod podge is also made by plaid, but i fully blame crappy mod podge for my Bad Christmas Ornaments of 2001).

a great thread about decoupaging furniture.
