I bought a Singer machine from the early 70s. I am totally in love with it. I had to wait ages and ages to use it however, because I sent away for a photocopy of the manual from Singer, and it took over a month for them to send it to me.

i have two sewing machines, one that is from the sixties, my grangma's, and is too much trouble to use, and my mother gave me hers, it's from the seventies and it works like a charm. i had to have it worked on once, by this proffessional sewing machine guy. i found him in the phone book. it was pretty expensive but worth it. the best advice i could give is, if you see a sewing machine like yours in a thrift store that works snatch it up, even if it doesn't work but the parts look good i'd get it anyway to use for spare parts if i need them. old sewing machines in thrift stores are totally cheap. if it doesn't work, don't pay more than $5 for it, even if it does i wouldn't pay more than $15. good luck. sewing with old machines can be tricky sometimes, but i think it's really worth it, it takes more practice and skill, but i get more pride in it. these new sewing machines practically do all the work for you.
