nicegirl512 got me thinking about Halloween and how it's never too early to think about these things.

What was the best costume you ever saw or had the honor of wearing?

I'm sure this has been mentioned before but, hey, i need some fresh ideas! Plus, I'm bored at work because everyone is gone do to the fact that the Red Wings won the cup last night and I'm sure they are either still partying or trying to recover. (It is a HUGE deal in this neck of the woods.)

hee. never too early. LAST NOVEMBER I bought a costume pattern - for a wench outfit, complete with corset, b/c I figured it would take me all year to make that costume.

I haven't started yet.
sigh.

THAT was going to be my best costume!

otherwise, the cowgirl outfit is a good one. so good I've worn it three times ;)

My favorite costume - the story:

A few years ago my boyfriend did something REALLY stupid. He asked my if he could borrow some money and pay me back. He had been really good about it before so I said yes. Well, he makes off with my debit card and makes some order over the phone. When he tells me what he got, I go completely balistic. First he spent twice as much as I was expecting him to spending some money I was saving for a sexy blue dress for my "devil in a blue dress" costume (he knew about my costume plans). I was angry.

Second, he had spent my costume money on a pair of fluffy white angel wings for his ex-girlfriend/still good friend's costume. "So", I say all pissed like "her costume is more important than mine?". According to him she had already paid for a pair that were on back order - and that she'd pay him back for them. But- she wouldn't be paying us back until after the Halloween party (the ex-girlfriend's party no less). I was ENRAGED. Also, imagine my seething anger when we drove over to drop off the package when they came in. I stayed in the car, he got out and handed her the box.. She opened it and squeeled with glee. I cranked up the stereo so I wouldn't have to listen...

Anyway, there I was - screwed out of my own Halloween costume. Boyfriend hiding from me because he had been really stupid. I'm having visions of myself being at her party and tearing the wings off her back and then jumping up and down on them. After all they were my wings until I got paid back.

But I'm not one for causing a big scene in public. Instead I decided to get crafty on their asses ;)

I had a full length vinyl ballgown (very sexy) - the perfect base for a rockin' Lilith costume. Using wire hangers, black taffeta remnant I had, and black electrical tape I made a pretty cool pair of batwings. I was able to attach them to the lacings on the back of the vinyl ballgown and secure it all with a red velvet cincher I had. My boy quietly made me a pair of nifty little demon horns out of sculpy - and gave them to me before the party. Some red body paint on my face an cleavage rounded off the costume.

I looked way cooler in my demon Lilith outfit than she did in her Valkyrie costume. :)

In the girl's defence - she had no idea that my boy had spent the cash out of my costume fund. She did pay him back (which came to me immediately). She and I are on pretty good terms these days. Hopefully she doesn't know about Glitter and read all about my wing-rage LOL

Tea and Biscuits, I'd be PISSED.

you have every right to be enraged. I woulda kicked him and hard...but maybe that's why i no longer have a boyfriend :)
Anyway as for great costumes, I have been catwoman, jasmine from aladdin, a chinese fire drill, day light savings, cleopatra and a fairy princess. Most of the good ones were made by my mom. The half assed ones I made were:
Chinese fire drill: wore shirt with chinese character, got toy fire helmet and toy drill that i attached a little piece of red and orangey paper to look like a flame. theme: 'come as your favorite cliche'
Day light savings: more of a prop than anything, cut a piggy bank open and put a light stick in it, carried it around...it was lame b/c the theme was 'come as your favorite holiday' - btw not my fav but the most creative i could think of
Fairy princess: wore 'princess' longsleeved shirt (thank god for the girls section of target for cheap stuff) fairy wings, face glitter, a cute little girly skirt with a chain and doc martins, and had a fairy butterfly wand...get it, fairy plus princess = fairy princess.
other good ones at that party were elouise, punky brewster and alan iverson.

My friend Linda always goes as someone recently dead- in very poor taste of course.
When I first met her, she was Tupac (imagine a 100-lb white girl with "thuglife" scrawled on her belly) and a few years later, she was Jonbenet Ramsey- absolutely tasteless, but hilarious.

By goddess On 06/14/02

my friends and i were the scooby doo gang last year (before the movie!). it was my favorite costume ever. people were stopping us on the street to take our picture. :)

i have pictures, should i post them on scp? yearbook or other folder??

*edited to add the quality isn't that great, but you'll get the idea...

By rose_red On 06/14/02

There were Halloween costume folders on the old SCP maybe the same should be in the new version. I'll see if my Lilith costume pics are around anywhere...

By seventwelve On 06/14/02

I always want to make kick ass costumes forHalloween, but I never have a Halloween party to go to. :-(

I need less boring friends.

By goddess On 06/14/02

My cleopatra costume was for a 'come as someone from history aka someone dead' party. Someone came as Payne Stewart, I believe he died 3 days before that party...tasteless, but i suppose it was a creative idea.

A couple of years ago, I was Kurt Cobain, with a big bullet-hole in my forehead and my boyfriend was Courtney Love, with a shot-gun. That was fun and funny.

Battered wife is also a fun one. You can wear a night-gown and create bruises and stuff all over y'.

I love halloween! I've been making costumes for myself since elementary school and used to make them for my sister and brother too. I usually try to make some kind of sexy outfit for me to wear and something coordinating for the man.
Some of my favorites: cop & prisoner (black military surplus shirt, shorts & hat with fishnets, black leather gloves, sunglasses and handcuffs for me, orange jumpsuit and manacles for the man); vikings (faux fur tunics, viking horn hats from the toy store with fur trim added, suede boots with fur trim added, a ton of cool primitive jewelry from a friend, and braids for both of us); red riding hood & wolf (sewed all except the corset: a short gingham skirt with tulle underlay, white peasant blouse with red corset over it, reversible cape red satin/black velvet, ponytails, ruffly anklets and mary janes for me and plaid flannel nightshirt, nightcap with wolf ears attached, plastic nose with whiskers from the toy store, long fake nails for the man. The polaroids from that night are x-rated!). Last year we did flaming devils (fishnets, short red velvet skirt with flame-shaped hem, black sheer mesh shirt with red corset over, red riding hood cape reversed to black and horns and flame t-shirt, black shorts, evil eye makeup and horns for the man.)
I usually hit the discount fabric store and cheap toy store to see what's available and just go from there! We generally go to a large party given by one or the other of our friends and everyone goes all out with the costumes, even renting full-on outfits. Making it is half the fun for me. Don't have any ideas yet for this year, but I will be thinking about it soon...

My roommate and I went as Bono and the Edge on year. I wore vinyl pants, ubertrendy shades, a tight black shirt and painted stuble on my face. I messed up my hair and carried a cig with me *everywhere, and tried to look 'spent'. I had one of those 'Hello my name is' stickers with Bono written on it, just so people would know. That doesn't beat what my roomie did though. She didn't even dress up, she just wore her sticker proclaiming her as the Edge. That was the best, because she's Asian and doesn't look remotely Edge-like.

*forgot to finish a word. doh.

For years I made my man dress up with in couple costumes. Now that we have a sin hubby is off the hook and I channel all of that creative costume energy onto the boy.

Good ones were:

*Cruella DeVil and a Dalmation. This ROCKED b/c I found a white graduation gown that I trimmed in fake fur, for her coat. It looked GREAT! I wore it over a long black thrift store nightgown. The dalmation was a white sweatsuit with black spots spray-painted on.

*Zsa-Zsa Gabor and a Cop. This was topical and very funny at the time...

*Vampire Bride and Groom. Easy and fun.

Some of my best solo efforts have included a Queen Bee (simple skirt made from black and yellow striped fabric, black turtleneck with a gold crown sern on, tiara, antannae and other crafty accessories) and a Hogwarts Student (black coir robe embellished with a homemade Hogwarts crests and a really kick-ass Sorting Hat that I spent way to much time on but looked AWESOME!)

I LOVE Halloween!

By seventwelve On 06/14/02

Wow, you have a sin? How cool. Do you keep it in a box or what? :-)

By sobriquet On 06/14/02

I think this year I'm going as a drag queen. I'll have to get in shape, cause I don't have the legs for it :)

By msmolly On 06/14/02

The best dead person costume that I've seen someone wear was one my friend Shelley did in college. She made a small oven out of cardboard and wore it on her head with the oven door open to show her face and went as Sylvia Plath.

My own costume that I'm most proud of is my Medusa one from last year. If I can find a picture I'll put it on SCP, but it involved a headpiece made of wire hangers, novelty snakes and craft wire,

By AudDoll On 06/14/02

I made my friend a Mr Hankey the Christmas Poo costume one year. I loved that I turned my friend into a piece of shit!

A group costume that I desperately want to do is Robert Palmer and the Addicted to Love girls. I have perfect friends to do it with, but we've never had the opportunity. Damn!

By starkittn On 06/14/02

i haven't worn it yet, but i want to be the bee girl from the blind melon video this year.

By mishymisu On 06/15/02

oh my goodness ladies, you want a kickass costume idea? Get kungfugirl to tell you all about the time that she was "Sexy Nixon" Now that's a freaking COSTUME! I went once as the girl icon from the bathroom door sign. i even had a little bag with the guy icon which said "Mr. Right" Over it. And I once saw a girlie dressed in a "freudian slip" (A slip covered with psych terms) that was a neato one too.

Oh yeah, and while it's wasn't for halloween i used to have a full set of "birth control" hats. You know hats shaped like IUD's and sponges with spermicide and such? Just what every gal needs to look Fabulous!

By blueduvet On 06/15/02

if I can figure out how to make a large test tube to put myself in, I want to be Poly Styrene from the cover of the Germ Free Adolescents album. with that cute yellow dress she's wearing.
my favorite costume of my past is Miss Piggy.

By bunny On 06/15/02

last year i was a killer baby doll. no one knew what i was. but i had fun, none the less.

one year my mom went as tippy hedron (sp?) from the birds. that's a pretty common one. but my step-father chose a less obvious hitchcock film- north by northwest. he made a little model bi-plane and rigged it to hang above his head with a curtain rod and he wore a suit. so all night it looked like he was being chased by the plane. they won a contest; i was pretty impressed.

Sorb: I totally want to be a drag queen. I love the look. I really have to plan it out. I dont know if I want to be the drag queen that looks male, with harry legs and stubble, or the all out over makeup drag queen.

I had a friend who always did the best costumes. Once she was a person in the shower. She has some light weight pipes that she made to go around her and then did some attachment thing so they were shoulder height and supported by her back. She had a shower curtain hung on it, and a shower cap and a back scrubber......it was pretty cool, and it looked like she was really naked under (bodysuit) people keep peeking over her shower curtain.

In the 7th grade I went to the Halloween dance as a drag king, and won the costume contest. Much to the protacted horror of my friends. I thought it was pretty cool, though. I went as a gangster, put my hair up, had a pinstriped suit, a carnation, shirt and tie, hat, etc.
For anyone that wants to do drag king, it's a great costume that's pretty cheap and involves only two stores - one trip to the thrift store for the male attire, and one trip to the Halloween notions store for a moustache and spirit gum.

I was also a Madonna wanna be in the 8th grade and thought I looked great, though I didn't win anything. I had the whole costume there, too, the fishnet and lace and rubber bracelets, crucifixes, ten pounds of makeup, gloves, etc. That would be a cool costume now - Desperately Seeking Susan era Madonna.

I was Princess Leia one year and that was cool, but everyone kept mistaking me for Madame Butterfly, which sucked.
