Does anyone have any homemade recipe for linen spray? You know, stuff that makes your sheets and pillowcases smell nice and fresh (even when maybe they're not...see the discussion on La Vida Crafty). Origins has one, but their stuff is so expensive for me!

Try these websites or do a search on google.com for "aromatherapy." Good luck!

Did a search and found this recipe to put in your iron or to use as a spray:

20 ozs. distilled water
1 1/2 ozs. 100 proof vodka
100 drops of lavender essential oil

i use the cheapo dollar tree "body spray" as room/linen spray.
i also make my own, w/ water, rubbing alcohol, & fragrance/perfume/essential oil. maybe 2/3 water, 1/3 alcohol, and 1/4 tsp oil (i don't know exactly, coz i just mix it up in the bottle without measuring.) i put the alcohol in 1st, then add the oil, shake to dissolve the oil in the alcohol, then fill the rest of the way w/ water. test, and add more oil if ya want.play around until you get the strength you like. i recycle bottles that spray in a fine mist, like old hairspray bottles. it smells like alcohol for about 10 seconds, then that evaporates & you have your fragrance. i've made my own body mist this way using perfume oils, and i love it.

I got some linnin spray from Calgon, and it lasts forever on sheets and carpet. I have the vodka recipe but it evaportes too soon for me.

i use a tiny drop of dish soap in my room spray. it emulsifies the oils, but there's so little it doesn't change the smell of make it foamy. i don't see exactly what the point of the alcohol is. alcohol isn't very good for your skin or natural fibers.

my room spray is mostly water, a splash of vinegar (to neutralize funky smells) and maybe 10 drops of essential oil (lavendar and sandalwood) in an atomizer bottle of about 4oz. capacity. i also spray it in the dryer with my already-worn work clothes and tumble them for 10 minutes to "freshen" them between washings. it works quite well.

emulsify! that's the word i was looking for, not "dissolve!" that's why i use alcohol, to emulsify the oils...never thought of dish soap, but it makes perfect sense; after all, that's why it works on dirty dishes, coz it emulsifies the oils! i'll try that next time!

I have always heard that the alcohol is in the spray because it dries so quickly. If the spray was all water you would end up with very wet linens. Also, vodka has little to no odor and wont compete w/ the fragrance. I would think that most rubbing alcohols would smell too strong.

welllll...the rubbing alcohol has always worked for me, and since it was what i had on hand, it was what i used. it DOES smell strongly of alcohol for about 10 seconds, then it all evaporates & just smells like the oil, honest! still, i'm gonna try the dish soap idea. i usually have that on hand, too. *grin*

What great ideas you guys have! Anyhow, my idea has nothing to do with linen spray, but I just thought I'd throw it out because it's a nice little aromatherapy thing. Dab a cotton ball with the essential oil of your choice (I really like rosewood), then put it in your vacuum cleaner bag. It's quite lovely.

linen spray is for ironing linens, is it not? if you're ironing them, the heat of the iron evaporates what little water there is immediately.

iron my sheets? no way! but i still like them to smell nice, so i spray 'em. that's probably cheating, but hey, it works!

i also tried making the vodka/essential oil/distilled water recipe and i agree that the fragrance evaporates WAY too quickly.

a bit off topic from the linen/spray thread (which i am definately going to try to make, by the way!)...but does anyone out there have a good perfume recipe that holds the fragrance for a couple of hours?

thanks =I

For a freshening spray I just mix some water with a few drops of oil, shake really well in a spray bottle and voila. I spray my sheets sometimes, as I'm making the bed and it's also good to just get rid of funky stale air, too. I really reccommend using bergamont as the scent in whatever mathod you use. Very fresh but not cloying. Rose is also nice for sheets.

re: perfume recipe
it occurred to me recently that i ought to be able to use a lip balm recipe to make solid perfume. i think that would work, don't you? seems like it would be long-lasting, too. i haven't tried it yet, but i betcha some of these glitter gals have.
