Two of my bestfriends are leaving soon hike the appalachin (sp) trail. They will be driving cross country and I wanted to make them a mixed cd, their road trip cd. I was wondering what ideas you have that would be great on that comp. Thankie

Lust for Life - Iggy Pop Best Driving Song EVER!

The Doors - Roadhouse Blues (actually, anything by the Doors!)

Eve 6 - Open Road Song

By maeve On 02/10/01

just make sure it has a lot of variety.

hmm, i'd suggest Wasting My Life by the Hippos. I don't know why, it has nothing to do with road trips, I just like listening to it in the car.

happy songs. happy is good.

i also like bad disco for that sort of thing.

By KatMc On 02/10/01

'on the road again'
something fun, that just makes you smile, and act silly, and wanna sing like: 'I will survive'
or 'respect' by aretha franklin...

By monroe On 02/11/01

i always put trucker songs and good old johnny cash songs on crosscountry roadtrip tapes...

By kickarse On 02/12/01

Sing along, good time music is the key.

My friends once took a road trip to Las Vegas on the spur of the moment to see Robbie Knievel jump over something, and the tape they brought was just a loop of "Holiday Road" (that song from National Lampoon's Vacation) over and over again. TOO FUNNY.

The entire Moby cd is wonderful for driving.

I like hard stuff that you can scream along to.

And American Pie by Don McLean- everyone in the world seems to knowthewords tothat song

bohemian rhapsody - Queen
piano man -BillyJoel
Space Odyssey (ground control to Major Tom) -David Bowie
Free Bird -Lynyrd Skynrd
The Wall Part2 - PinkFloyd

classic rock is great for roadtrips

I couldn't road trip with out some funky femme singing on the radio. Anything loud from tori amos is grand. (boys for pele is my fave cd) techno is always good - makes you feel like your in a movie or something. hehehe. And then there is always fun 80's music - my fave. (Oingo Boingo!)

anywho. thats what I listen to...

I always like to make mix tapes that refer to the places you're going. Since they're driving cross country, scope out their route and if they hit, say, Memphis, you can put on "Just Stopped in (to see what condition my condition is in)" cause it has the lyrics 8 miles out of Memphis and I got no spare.

Or cheesy wuss rock "please come to boston" which actually references about a billion places.

It's all about the sing along music, which for me and my friends means 80s music, and random wuss rock like Sail Away.

This is gonna date me...

"Route 66" Depeche Mode

By Milu On 02/13/01

I find that 80's music is great for driving, everyone knows the words and it brings back memories and stories.

By punkyinpink On 02/13/01

another awesome carmix tape song is blister in the sun by violent femmes

:)

By aoi On 02/13/01

"coyote" by better than ezra. there's a line that goes "raise your feet as you cross the state line", which reminds me of road trips when i was a kid.

anything by the pixies kicks ass on any road trip. especially "come on pilgrim" because it's so silly.

By xyjones On 02/14/01

songs by the allman brothers are very evocative of "the road" for me. and certain bruce springsteen too - i know "born to run" and "thunder road" are kinda cliche, but they're also great songs!

By MochiSaru On 02/14/01

my personal favorites for road trips are melissa etheridge, Ani, Lynard skynard(sp)(freebird is the BEST road song), and all of tom petty's wildflowers album.

By subtle On 02/15/01

My husband and I always listen to "Driver's Seat" by Sniff 'n' the Tears when we go on our late night drives. It's swell.

By megglebug On 02/15/01

I'm going to say that anything Tom Petty is good to drive and sing to. Though i sing to just about anything when i'm driving, and if i don't know the words i make them up :P

By MochiSaru On 02/16/01

i find that sublime is also good road trip music, becase everyone knows the words and it's all pretty upbeat, like i could never listen to cat power in the car- i'd drive myself over a cliff.

By msteph On 02/16/01

REM has a version of "King of the Road" that I've always enjoyed. Chris Isaak has a number of road-themed songs, including "Drivin'" on his first album, "Silvertone." Also, Cornershop has a cool duet called "It's Good to Be on the Way Back Home Again" that I could listen to once an hour for the rest of my life.

Here's my other road-trip tip: Go to your local used-record store and buy a whole lot of $1 cassettes. My last SF to Arizona trip was stocked with a virtual re-creation of my tape collection circa 1990, with lots of Fine Young Cannibals, Smithereens, Primitives, and other guilty pleasures.

By mesje On 02/23/01

i luuurv that song by Cornershop... did someone else do it before them? my roommate could have sworn that someone did. we still don't know who!

80s songs are so great for the road! 80s songs are so great for everything! and if you don't like 'em, they're over in 3 minutes 14 seconds!

Indigo Girls - Galileo, Shame on You
Michelle Shocked - Come a Long Way
Stone Roses - I am the Resurrection
Breeders - Driving at Night (is that the name of the song?)

I'm going to go make a mix tape right now!

By VioletScam On 03/08/01

I say listen to some good old fashioned punk rock during the day, or Sublime, or disco, anything upbeat, and then wind it down as the sun sets, maybe with some Bjork or Erykah Badu, and then listen to techno or rap when it gets dark. Portishead is good for at night, but don't get to into it, because you could miss your exit.

By Bizwitch On 03/09/01

i guess i'm a bit different, but i like my music loud and hard. i love driving to some NIN, rob zombie, manson, type o, lords of acid, hole, etc...although sometimes quiter music is better if i have a headache or something. tori is good anytime, and i also like driving to the eagles, counting crows, poe, belly, heather nova, depeche mode, that kind of thing. can be very relaxing. i suppose i'm no help, since i don't know what their taste is, but hell, maybe they like it...

By mad-donna On 03/09/01

Id say that you cant go wrong with the Elvis's (Costello AND Presley)
Also Thin Lizzy's Best of cd has some winners like Boys are Back in Town, Breakout
And then there's Led Zep II.....

By teaglass On 03/09/01

tapes in my car
sebadoh-smash your head on the punk rock
it's very worn out. i can sing all the words in my sleep.
i'm thinking about starting a band and all we would do is play that album.
i drove cross country on it. and i had a really good time.
caio bella!
