Two of my bestfriends are leaving soon hike the appalachin (sp) trail. They will be driving cross country and I wanted to make them a mixed cd, their road trip cd. I was wondering what ideas you have that would be great on that comp. Thankie

The entire Moby cd is wonderful for driving.

I couldn't road trip with out some funky femme singing on the radio. Anything loud from tori amos is grand. (boys for pele is my fave cd) techno is always good - makes you feel like your in a movie or something. hehehe. And then there is always fun 80's music - my fave. (Oingo Boingo!)

I always like to make mix tapes that refer to the places you're going. Since they're driving cross country, scope out their route and if they hit, say, Memphis, you can put on "Just Stopped in (to see what condition my condition is in)" cause it has the lyrics 8 miles out of Memphis and I got no spare.

I find that 80's music is great for driving, everyone knows the words and it brings back memories and stories.

another awesome carmix tape song is blister in the sun by violent femmes

"coyote" by better than ezra. there's a line that goes "raise your feet as you cross the state line", which reminds me of road trips when i was a kid.
|

songs by the allman brothers are very evocative of "the road" for me. and certain bruce springsteen too - i know "born to run" and "thunder road" are kinda cliche, but they're also great songs!

my personal favorites for road trips are melissa etheridge, Ani, Lynard skynard(sp)(freebird is the BEST road song), and all of tom petty's wildflowers album.

My husband and I always listen to "Driver's Seat" by Sniff 'n' the Tears when we go on our late night drives. It's swell.

I'm going to say that anything Tom Petty is good to drive and sing to. Though i sing to just about anything when i'm driving, and if i don't know the words i make them up :P

i find that sublime is also good road trip music, becase everyone knows the words and it's all pretty upbeat, like i could never listen to cat power in the car- i'd drive myself over a cliff.

REM has a version of "King of the Road" that I've always enjoyed. Chris Isaak has a number of road-themed songs, including "Drivin'" on his first album, "Silvertone." Also, Cornershop has a cool duet called "It's Good to Be on the Way Back Home Again" that I could listen to once an hour for the rest of my life.

i luuurv that song by Cornershop... did someone else do it before them? my roommate could have sworn that someone did. we still don't know who!

I say listen to some good old fashioned punk rock during the day, or Sublime, or disco, anything upbeat, and then wind it down as the sun sets, maybe with some Bjork or Erykah Badu, and then listen to techno or rap when it gets dark. Portishead is good for at night, but don't get to into it, because you could miss your exit.

i guess i'm a bit different, but i like my music loud and hard. i love driving to some NIN, rob zombie, manson, type o, lords of acid, hole, etc...although sometimes quiter music is better if i have a headache or something. tori is good anytime, and i also like driving to the eagles, counting crows, poe, belly, heather nova, depeche mode, that kind of thing. can be very relaxing. i suppose i'm no help, since i don't know what their taste is, but hell, maybe they like it...
