Topic Favorite Female Superheros Go to previous topic Go to next topic Go to higher level

By kmartdollie On 05/05/02

Sick of Spidey? Tired of Superman? Think Batman enjoys spending an AWFUL lot of time with Robin in tights?

What were your favorite female superheroes? Who do you wish you could go down to the multiplex and watch in their own big budget action adventure? Or whose female kick-ass movies did you enjoy?

MOVIES I WISH WOULD GET MADE:
Wonder Woman
Bionic Woman
Nancy Drew (but really cool and stylish, like a film noir with an indie pop soundtrack, starring Natalie Portman or Reese Witherspoon or something)

FEMALE SUPERHERO MOVIES I LOVED:
Star Wars - who kicked more ass than Princess Leia? (Favorite look on Carrie Fisher: definitely the donuts)
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
Charlie's Angels
Tomb Raider
Aliens, Alien, Alien 3, Alien Resurrection
Starship Troopers (the female soldiers were great in that!)
Raiders of the Lost Ark (Karen Allen kicked ass in that)
Blade Runner - Darryl Hannah was an ass-kicking psycho back-handspringing ninja space age Barbie in that one
Cleopatra Jones, Jackie Brown - Pam Grier rules

What's your favorites? Let's hear it for the ladies!!!

By Elf_Chick On 05/05/02

Xmen: Jean Grey, Storm and Rogue (and even Mystique, the shape-shiftin' bad gal) all kicked ass. and the comics had even more rockin' chick characters.

i second Crouching Tiger; too fucking cool!

ditto Star Wars (my bro and i just dragged out the tapes -- the OLD ones, none of this Special Edition BS! -- and watched Ep IV this a.m.): Princess Leia did seriously kick butt. her cinnamon roll hairdo was the classic, but i think she was at her coolest in Empire & Jedi (though the latter had that gratuitous fanboy favorite of the metal bikini outfit in Jabba's palace)

hmm, what else? I may have to think and come back to this thread.
oh, kmd, i like your vision of Nancy Drew!

if we're talking potential movies, there were some cool teen historical-fiction books (by Scott O'Dell and some of his cadre) that would have been cool, and they had strong chick leads. titles are escaping me at the moment though...my brain is on final exam overload!! {:P

more later, maybe...

POWERPUFF GIRLS!!!!!! how can you not love kick-ass cutie-pies who play in a band, are vegetarian, speak mandarin, AND save the world??

and aeon flux rocks my world.

i also loooove wonderwoman and bionic woman. they were my idols growing up.

By Punky Brewster On 05/05/02

Where is Athos? I know she's a Wonder Woman fan!

By Georgie girl On 05/05/02

I am the world's biggest Wonder Woman fan, but I'm kind of dreading having it made into a movie.
There was a lot of talk awhile ago about Sandra Bolluck starring in it, which I wasn't crazy about, but just last week I heard that Jennifer Aniston and Jennifer Lopez were interested in the role. Just like that, it went from bad to worse.

By ChinaDoll On 05/05/02

I ADORE Power Puff girls!!!!

Also love Nancy Drew, adored Charlie's Angels. And my friend and I were wondering about if they were going to do a Wonder Woman movie...

Star Wars has terrific female chars too.

By meadow On 05/05/02

oooh yes wonder women, i like catwomen balls. and ppg (buttercup not only resembles me in looks but in attitude).
and action girl!

By jodysomething On 05/05/02

I always loved Catwoman. The classic character, NOT Michelle Pfeiffer!

There was a short-lived series in the 80's called The Huntress; she was the daughter of Batman and Catwoman in an alternate universe. She was very cool.

By Athyra On 05/05/02

I nominate Parker Posey for Nancy Drew film noir girlie!

By kmartdollie On 05/06/02

I also forgot some of my all time favorites:

*Anne Parillaud as La Femme Nikita (Pat Benetar meets Chanel/Mugler wearing superkickass spy)

*Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman in Batman II

*Tina Turner as Auntie Entity in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome

I actually think Rose McGowan would make a good WonderWoman. Or Alyssa Milano. Or maybe it would even be cool to have a black or Asian wonderwoman - I could see Ms. Lopez doing it, too.

As for the Bionic Woman, I think Angelina Jolie would make a kick-ass Jamie Summers. Chhhhh chhh chhhh chhhh chhhh....

By rsunshine On 05/11/02

LET ME HEAR IT FOR PRINCESS LEIA! she got the gun and han, what a woman:) heehee, if anyone out there reads the star wars novels, you can see what a babe leia is:) and i totally second your parker posey as nancy drew!!
my husband calls me rogue because i have a grey streak in my hair, too, (not intentional. it's why my hair is always a different color. usually a varying shade of red. but, it's okay, he's going bald at 25, so i call him "the incredible receding man") anyhow, i always liked the valkyrie from the gauntlet game.
(i had both wonder woman and spiper-man underoos, as a kid. my mom indulged my love of boy things and superheroes. now i am on the lookout for powerpuff girl undies in my size. if anyone sees them in a 8, let me know. HAH)

By januarygrl On 05/06/02

let's not forget trinity in the matrix, although i wish they'd take away the part where her role in the movie was to be neo's girl. she's ass-kicking enough on her own.

crouching tiger, hidden dragon is pretty awesome. i like chinese kung-fu stories (i read a lot of them) because they have lots of smart, sassy and very strong female characters.

i really liked charlie's angels too. they're such independent and strong women who don't depend on the boys to back them up. in fact they're the ones who ends up saving the boys. :)

jangrl. :)

By robotgirl On 05/06/02

yay for the powerpuff girls movie coming out this summer!

meadow we must be twins because *i* look like buttercup too! okay, maybe i wish i looked like buttercup...

who would the wonderwoman fans out there like to see play wonderwoman? i was trying to think of an a-list hollywood actress i could picture as ww but i couldn't come up with anyone...of course i am not really up on movie stars.

By gadgetgirl On 05/06/02

the widow maker!

(oh, and Dot from Animaniacs, I still miss 'em)

By divia On 05/06/02

Jubilee from the X-Men. Shes spunky! She wears alot of yellow! She likes bubble tea and Blondie records!

I read too many comics. I really do.

By rose_red On 05/06/02

I've always been a WonderWoman fan. I don't know if anyone could replace Linda Carter in the role :)

Also, at around the same time WW was on tv, there was a show called The Secrets of Isis on. She ROCKED!

I wanted to be Leia when I grew up. Although, I have to disagree with someone (might not have even been mentioned on this thread) but Episodes 4 thru 6 were all about merchedising to. I distinctly remember being in Kindergarten playing with my StarWars action figures in the sandbox (that would have been around 1977/78) and wanting more figures to play with. And what about ewoks? Cute, cuddly, perfect to sell toys... But I loved the films (episode 1 included) none the less.

Of the X-Men, Storm is my favorite. But frankly I was always disappointed in the casting of Halle Berry - I was hoping for Angela Basset in the role.

I have to second the Trinity mention. She could kick some serious butt.

By Elf_Chick On 05/06/02

gadgetgirl: Animaniacs ROCKED!! That was the funniest damn show, and so much of the humor went right over the heads of the kids...

divia: what is the Xmen comic storyline doing these days? i abandoned it in like 97 or so when they went to some oddball alternate universe thing and it was confusing and not as cool as the old stuff.

there are a lot of cool chicks in Anime. Asuka Langley in Evangelion was spunky and cool in a sort of snotty way. ;p

I LOVE the outer sailor soldiers in Sailor Moon (Uranus, Neptune and Pluto): they're older and more mature than like Sailor Moon herself is, and more concerned with their mission.

Also, i'm always mentioning this one, but Revolutionary Girl Utena! Utena and Juri in particular are ass-kicking duelist girls.

hmm, there must be more....

By Elf_Chick On 05/06/02

ps I'm going with kmd's original version of Reese Witherspoon as Nancy Drew, with a cute pair of glasses and a fetching sweater set ;)

Robotgirl - about four years ago, when she was first making a name for herself in Hollywood and before she married Old Man Douglas, Catherine Zeta Jones was being considered for Wonder Woman. Physically, she's a good choice, because she's so statuesque and in my opinion gorgeous.
I don't know who could play the role.
But Reese is a good choice for Nancy Drew; as much as I love my girlfriend Parker Posey, I think she's a little long of tooth for the girl detective.

By rose_red On 05/06/02

I could easily see Reese Witherspoon as Nancy Drew - but George was always my favorite.

I think it was because as an overly-sensitive 8-year-old brunette, I was irritated by descriptions of Nancy being so perfect, pretty and blond. Not that Nancy wasn't really cool and nice, but still it bothered me.

Anyway, if I had to cast the Nancy Drew movie:
Nancy Drew: Reese Witherspoon
George Fayne: Parker Posey
Bess Marvin: Drew Barrymore

Joanna *who read to many of these books when she was young*

By kickarse On 05/06/02

I think Lucy Lawless (Xena) should play Wonder Woman! Now THAT'S a badass woman, and she reminds me of Lynda Carter's WW. If she's not available, they could always call me! I'm tall and have black hair! (ha ha)

When I was little, I wore my WW underoos 24-7 and would try to tie up members of my family with my "Golden Lasso of Truth" that my sister crocheted for me. I love Wonder Woman!

By farce On 05/06/02

I think janeane garofalo should be wonderwoman
or chloe sevigny.. haha she could play her as the detached too cool for the world wonderwoman.

Is anyone else horrified by the live action scooby doo movie coming out?

I personally loved she-ra when i was a kid i think that would be a super cool movie now

By nicegirl512 On 05/06/02

Definitely Wonder Woman. How can a woman with an invisible plane not be your favorite? I also liked the Wonder Twins girl and Cat Woman. I had Cat Woman underoos when I was little, and I knew I looked totally hot in them.

I loved Charlie's Angels, I am all about chicks kicking ass. I've heard they're making another one, but no details as to cast and release date.

Gadgetgirl, I LOVED Animaniacs. My favorite was Katie KaBoom, because it captured the teenage experience so well.

By kmartdollie On 05/06/02

I'm digging the idea of J.Lo as Wonderwoman. Her hair she wore for the Oscars was perfect Wonderwoman hair - backcombed on top, bouffant. All she needed was the little yellow tiara with the red star and she'd be good to go. Although girlfriend would have to get rid of her blonde streaks, and I haven't seen J. Lo with natural black hair in about 7 years (not since Selena).

I am really loving the idea of Angelina Jolie as Wonderwoman, though. Angelina's got the blue eyes, which are key, and she makes such a good action heroine. However, I'd also cast her in the Bionic Woman, so I can't give Angelina all the good parts.

I could see Jodie Foster as the Bionic Woman. Or maybe Linda Hamilton! The Bionic Woman doesn't have to appeal to the teeny bop crowd, she could be a little more mature.

I also like the idea of Fairuza Balk as Wonderwoman - she also has the blue eyes and the intensity. She's kind of freaky but I think she could channel that into WonderWoman in a good way. Also, they'd have to Dermablend over her many tatooes.

By brit-knitboy On 05/06/02

Can I just say thanks to Kmartdollie for dredging up long forgotten memories of Tina Turner as Auntie in Beyond Thunderdome! I was strangely obsessed with that film - I have no idea why.
"Bust a deal and face the wheel" ands all that..

Also not strictly a superhero by Slappy the Squirrel from Animaniacs was always a rare treat and totally ahead of its time.
