I have a very naughty habbit. I throw my clothes on the floor.I even have a hamper..how can I stop this nasty little habbit of mine? any ideas?

By stella On 01/18/01

i do it too. i have a clothes rack in my room, and i TRY to hang hang-up clothes on it when i take them off, but i usually just toss them on the floor. fortunately, having clothes on the floor isnt dangerous or horrible, just a little slovenly.

i dont know any habit-breakers... maybe write yourself a note and put it on the floor where you usually throw your clothes. self hypnosis, perhaps...

I had the same problem, so a solution was a big bucket (like a plastic garbage pain) in the corner where I normally throw my clothes. That way you get all the fun of being able to just chuck em and don't have to pick up a huge ugly mess later

i used to throw my clothes on the floor, until my room got so messy i was afriad, if i put them on the floor i'd never see them again i wouldn't actually suggest it, though.

hmmm, we have brown recluse spiders here. Nasty buggers, leave huge weeping sores for months, and that's after the hospitalization. They like to snuggle into dirty clothes for some reason. Still doesn't stop me, though.

One thing is make use of hooks and open baskets. That way something you think you might wear running tomorrow morning is not underneath dirty socks and underwear. Open baskets invite a toss from across the room as someone else suggested and you can even sort by color or needs repair or needs stain treatment.

I like the open basket idea because I am also a guilty "throwclothesontheflooreveniftheyareclean" kinda gal. But i have limited space. How could I go with the basket idea and still have room to walk around in my apartment?

Can you hang things from the wall? Find a stud and put a couple or three hooks in it for each basket to distribute the weight a little.

Plastic baskets tear with rough use, but you might get a sturdier one...

Also, stacking milkcrates. Clothes may spill out the sides, but you could even wedge the first one at an angle, maybe 30 degrees with a brick or something, and then slide each one on top.

ugh, i hate brown recluses. they try to say that they don't exist here in northern CA, but i know someone who has big divots on his arms from being bitten by them, working on an old shed or something. another person i know was bitten by one and now is extremely allergic to any spider bite. i've seen a few, and i don't even bother screaming and leaping about, i kill them quickly and effectively. they're agressive and scary.

the main problem here is black widows, and they will hide in folded blankets or piles of clothes. they're not very agressive, but i've already been bitten by one and i dont care to be again, so i squish them. all other spiders i put outside, unless they were running across my body, extremely large, or look like they might be a brown recluse.

sorry to go off topic. i live in a spidery area for some reason, and it's standard practice to share your spider-battles whenever you can.

Yeah, we have both, too. I live in a very old citrus grove cottage and there is no way to seal up one of these houses short of dipping them in wax. And then the palmetto bugs would eat the wax.

I've never seen a widow indoors, but I have seen the rare palmetto widow, a red! black widow, on a field trip with other botany geeks. Seems to be in illdefined locations rather than throughout, but a neighbor was bitten by a recluse a half year ago and she still won't wear a skirt or shorts because of the wound and scarring.

Me too about the spiders. I save everyone except for the few i know to be dangerous or some that look malevolent but I can't immediately ID. Yeah I get spider bites on occasion, but if they keep down the other insects I don't mind.

I HATE spiders! Growing up in Australia didn't help much either. Those brown recluses sound nasty, I don't think I've ever seen one thankfully.
In high school back in Aust, I lived in the boarding house, and we used to get those huge, completely harmless wolfman/huntsman spiders. We had a girl in the house who was completely fearless of spiders that we would always have come and get them. You can imagine the scene, 40 girls aged from 13-17 running around and screeching about spiders, and Jenny calmly walking through our midst with a spider almost as big as her hand in her hand. I shudder still thinking about it :)

Hey, what happened to the clothes on the floor thread????

My solution was to buy a wrought iron bench for my bedroom. Now, instead of throwing my clothes on the floor, I throw them on it!!!! I'm not sure if that qualifies as progress or not...

hunt out a cool old fashioned hat stand in junk shops etc. Then just fling stuff over it....worked for me....

I have the same problem. The chair and hook on the wall solutions work best to control the situation for me. Towels and bathrobe are on one set of hooks, coats/jackets on the next set and worn once yet still clean clothes are thrown on the chair. I have a tall wicker basket/hamper like the ones from Pier One Imports for dirty clothes. If you leave the top off you can throw your clothes in and fancy yourself a basketball star when ya get in.

I too had that problem, till I moved in with my boyfriend and his cat that likes to pee on my clothes if I leave them on the floor. Now I have a new problem. Ha ha. :)

Honestly, I don't know what I'd recommend though. I was a chronic clothes tosser as well, lifelong. I think the basket sounds nice. I now toss mine in a dark closet, where I can never find them again. I MUST come up with an organization plan.

By Athyra On 01/19/01

good idea with the clean clothes hamper!
When I am tired, and just want to go to bed, it's hard enough to brush my teeth, let alone hang up a pair of jeans or fold a sweater and put it away.
All that talk about spiders creeped me out though, I've never lived in a place full of venemous insects. Ugh.
