hi everyone.
i was browsing michael's the other days and found some beautiful christmas flowers 70% off. i wanted to make them into the big flower pins that are tres chic in all the fashion mags right no, but i'm not sure of the best way to do it...hot glue a safety pin on or just stick it through my blouse and the back of the flower?

has anyone seen instructions somewhere with the best way to make one of these?

I just safety pin mine right on. I mean the pins are under the flower and your clothes, no one can see. However, a less ghetto version would be to buy a bag of pin backs in the jewelry making section of your craft store and hot glue the flower on.

You might think of spicing some flowers up by putting a really thin strand of glue along the edges of the petals and putting glitter on there. You could also stitch some sequins or shimmery beads on your flower as well.

Does anyone collect those really tacky metal and plastic flower pins from the 60's and 70's?

I have a few of those old flower pins. Not my favorites, but ya never know. I have way too much of everything except time.

To make a sturdier back on the flower pin, buy the pin backs and see if they sell any discs of plastic nearby that you would center the pin back on, then glue the flower on top of that.

Or you could cut recyclable plastic pieces in nice round shapes.

i am guilty of collecting those metal flower pins from the 1960's...i've got yellow, puke green, off white, i'm waiting for a red one i swear, and the day that i will actually wear one (they jsut never seem to go right with anything i put on)

I am so glad I am not alone on the tacky metal pin issue. I have yet to wear one out in public as well. I used to have them pinned all over a lamp shade, and may one day go back to that right now I just have them sitting out in a huge tray. I am trying to get inspired about another way to display them.

Speaking of inspiration I guess this thread sunk in, I am wearing a huge orange flower on my jacket today. I just have it saftey pinned on, nothing fancy smancy.

1. Trim the plastic stub off the back so it's flush...

2. Yes, I know, the flower will fall apart. Glue it back together with tacky glue.

3. glue down a pin-back (get real pin backs, safety pins won't lie right), and if desired, cover with a bit of green ribbon to secure further.

Another option is to cut down the stem to like, 2 inches, and shove it in one of your buttonholes.

i have at least 1/2 a dozen of those hideous metal pins, too, and i never wear them. why do i feel compelled to purchase enything over 30 years old!!??!!

i too have the compulsion to buy anything over 30 years old! it has led me to purchase things that i neither need or even match my place. they just go in a big box in my shed and await the day i start my own business (i talked about this in another thread) and sell stuff to people just like me who can't leave something so old behind, altho for a higher price :)

when I used to have long hair, I kept a very big silk (ahem, polyester) gerbera daisy in the bathroom. I would stick it in my ponytail, but I never quite figured out how to get the flower onto the elastic... so i just cut the wire short (like, 2 inches) and wove it in my hair. I was thinking of making a big boutonnier with it, now that my hair is short...
