does anyone know what I'm talking about here? I have a little mirror that looks like it may have been made in India. I got it from The Dressers in Toronto (Roncesvalles for anyone interested)
This mirror is surrounded by rhinestones (much like the mouse we've seen of late) the 'grout' (for lack of a better word) is turquoise blue and is quite hard. It has the look or consistency? of marshmallow creme.
I had a friend in grade school who also had a bottle covered with the stuff and shells. She'd made it in Hawaii. We're talking early 70's here so...
Anyway, does anyone have any clue what I'm talking about here?

Plaster of Paris?

I've seen many a craft project that involve it. It's goopy, it looks like marshmallow creme, it's easy. My guess is that the color come from either dye or paint mixed in with the goop before it hardens.

We made "fossils" with in in grade school.

I guess it could be plaster of paris but it's really shiny almost wet looking and foamy too. weird stuff, I wish I could show you!!

wait...I just took these pictures and threw them up on my tripod site.
can you see them?

I don't know if it's the right stuff, but Dilettante uses something that looks like similar to what you're describing (goopy and squishy yet rubbery) in her Confetti Kisses glasses. http://www.dilettantedesigns.com/newitems.html I'm sure if you email her she'll tell you what it is. She posted a little while ago about accidentally getting a non-food-safe grade of whatever it is, so maybe she'd sell it to you cheap (can't find the post-maybe it had something to do with fungus?)

*edited to add* I found the thread, hers is the first post in trash to treasure ideas. http://discuss.gromco.com/mwforum/topic_show.pl?id=10911#121468 It wasn't a fungus, it was a fungicide, and she said it's silicone.

Could it just be polymer clay?

it looks like it's tinted plaster of paris.

You could essentially do the same thing but in a more durable manner with tinted concrete, but it'll be wicked heavy.

It looks like the tinted grout they sell for mosaic stuff. You should be able to find something similar at a craft store or Home Depot.
