I was going to make something that has a bunch of pictures of flappers and silent movie stars for my friend's birthday. I've found most of the pictures I needed online, but I have a few questions.
First of all, I'm not really sure what I want to put the pictures on. I was thinking a shelf, a journal, or a jewler box, but If anyone could come up with some more creative or eccentric ideas, that'd be great.
I was also wondering what I should use to glue the pictures down with. I printed 75% of the pictures of the internet, and I am afraid if I use dilluted elmers glue, the pictures will bleed. I've never used anything else, so I'm not sure what works. Does anyone use anything that keeps the ink from bleeding?

howbout a hat box..one of those round guys. if she has any fun hats she could use it for that, or just for storage/decor.

I think it would be really great to decoupage the pictures around the edge of a mirror. You could take the glass down to a glass shop and get it cut in a really funky art deco shape.
I have no idea as to what would keep the ink from bleeding, or if it will even bleed at all. If it does, and nobody else has any ideas, I would try either using spray fixative on the pictures first or diluting the elmer's with milk instead of water.

If you used a laser printer, or if you go to Kinko's and make copies, then the ink will not run or bleed.
If you used an inkjet printer then the ink is pretty much going to always bleed a little; you can minimize this by gluing the pictures on with an industrial-strength glue stick (glue the backs only!), letting that dry, and then using a clear aerosol coating to spray over the top (in two or three light, quick coats). if you are really quick, you can use a brush-on polyurethane over the pics, and they won't bleed too much...i use Minwax Polycrylic, because it washes up with soap and water, and dries really quickly to a hard, shiny finish...plus it's cheap and versatile.

I would second the hatbox idea...you can also get new, plain ones at craft stores, usually for a few dollars. And think about sprinkling some glitter on the box as you put on the overcoat, for added pizzazz!

I bought this glass decorative dish a couple of years ago that someone had decoupaged and it is da' bomb! Crazy, it has a woman from the thrities draped on a couch smoking a ciggie...kinda like your project. Anyway, the person got a glass plate, something clear, that would have had a plant on it or something. Then they glued the picture on in the center that didn't take up the whole space. After that they painted a thin layer of silver on the bottom of the plate. When that dried they did a coat of dark blue. What I have is a beautiful picture of a woman surrounded by a silverish/blue paint. it faboo
