did they just recently decide to give them a last name because i was reading a transcript of this chat with christopher masterson and he said that they didn't have a last name.

I'm not sure when it happened, but I know I only found out what it was earlier this season.

The writers of "Malcolm In The Middle" blatantly go out of their way to avoid assigning a last name to the family, particularly in scenes showing homework assignments where the first name is shown written in the name blank, but the last name is offscreen. Another tell-tale sign is Commandant Spangler continually referring to Francis by his first name rather than "Cadet Wilkerson" (or whatever their last name turns out to be), which would be proper military protocol. As for the Wilkerson theory, as promulgated by several websites, I may know how that originated. I was watching my copy of the pilot episode a few days back, and in the scene where Francis is talking to Lois over the phone, his uniform's nameplate does have--you guessed it--"Wilkerson" embossed upon it. To my knowledge, that is the only screen reference to the name, and it doesn't even call attention to itself. I would suggest that since it was the pilot episode, and the characters and situations hadn't had a chance to coalesce into the MITM dynamic we all know and love now, it was just a throwaway idea that was never repeated once they realized it would be more fun to leave the family without a confirmed last name.

I don't know why, but I think the 'Malcolm' family is better off without a last name! It's... I don't know, ah... original, maybe?

You're right, The_One. The elusive last name is very similar to the speculation as to Kramer's first name in the Seinfeld series. In 1995, of course, it was revealed to be Cosmo. As for Malcolm In The Middle, it would best serve the show's quirky charm to never reveal their last name. That is unless the show is ever (God forbid) canceled, whereby it would make a neat component for the series finale.

From Wikipedia: The last name of the family has never been revealed on the show, but several sources have reported that it is "Wilkerson" or "Wiltkonson". This is the result of a joke that appeared in the original pilot script. In that script, Malcolm was walking to school when a neighborhood kid came running up shouting, "Malcolm, Malcolm, Malcolm. I was talking to my parents last night - I was listening to them talk, and what's your last name?" "Wilkerson, why?" Malcolm replied. "Oh. Who are the Pariahs?" said the other kid. The joke was eventually cut. One theory of why their last name has never been given is that the producers did not want them to be typecast as any particular ethnicity. However, Lois (the family matriarch)'s mom, who makes occasional appearances, is evidently of Eastern European descent.
